LOOKING BACK: 1983: Near-capacity crowd packs Hulman Center to hear Oak Ridge Boys

TERRE HAUTE Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.



1998

• Miranda Bennett (Terre Haute North), Danielle Beach (Terre Haute South) and Cody Abrell (West Vigo) were the Vigo County high-school homecoming queens.

• Larry Bird was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at Springfield, Mass.

• The Terre Haute Redevelopment Commission awarded a $5.1 million contract to CDI Inc. for the construction of the commercial-residential Center City in downtown Terre Haute.

• Responding to concerns of neighboring residents and businesses and the Youth Racing League, Hydrite Chemical Co., 1330 Lockport Road, announced plans for the prevention of future leaks and the installation of a warning system.

• David Butler, Swope Art Museum director, and Katie Bledsoe, campaign chairwoman, kicked off a capital campaign to raise funds for building renovation and increased endowment.

• Local institutions reported their freshmen retention rates: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology — 96 percent, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College — 76 percent, and Indiana State University — 68 percent.

• After 24 years in the Vigo County School Corp., Bill Kirby was leaving to become superintendent of the Smith-Green School Corp. of Churubusco, northwest of Fort Wayne.

1983

• Ted Kaperak won his first city golf tournament — the Strohs Men’s City competition.

• The City of Terre Haute bought the Storey Oil Co. property, 703 N. Third St. It was the first purchase of the 30 parcels of land needed for the $6.7 million Third Street Overpass project.

• Ted Branum submitted the highest bid for the 1.61-acre Otter Creek School property in North Terre Haute.

• A near capacity crowd filled Hulman Center for the Oak Ridge Boys concert. Owner of WPFR-AM and FM, the group donated the concert proceeds of $87,947 to the Wabash Valley Alliance for Growth and Progress.

• Volunteers from the Committee to Restore Mill Dam in North Terre Haute worked on the restoration. J.I. Case supplied four payloaders complete with operators to help with the project.

• Colleen Coleman, creative director at Ideas Inc., joined the Williams Co. as an assistant vice president. Charles A. Williams was president of the firm.

1958

• Schulte’s Golden Bears and the Black Cats of Gerstmeyer Tech played for the Key Club Award before 3,500 fans at Memorial Stadium. Schulte won 14-0 for the award provided by the high-school Key Clubs.

• Paul Manning celebrated the grand opening of his Standard Service gas station at Wabash and Brown avenues.

• Froderman Chevrolet of Brazil bought the Conrad Oldsmobile Co. Herschel Lybarger was the Froderman manager.

• The congregation of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 61⁄2 and Poplar streets, celebrated 100 years of Christian service to the community.

• The monthlong United Appeal campaign, led by Robert F. Prox Sr. hoped to raise $325,000 to support 23 community agencies and the American Red Cross.

• Mrs. Lloyd Adamson was elected to succeed Mrs. Robert Oliphant as chairwoman of the women golfers at the Country Club of Terre Haute. Mrs. Graham McMillan was the secretary-treasurer.
