LOOKING BACK: 1983: Judge rules for city in Honey Creek Square annexation

1998

• Vigo County’s request for $1.1 million in aid for summer flood and storm damage topped a list of 23 Indiana counties eligible for federal disaster relief.

• Digital Audio Disc Corp., Indiana Center for Aviation Technology, and the Shering-Plough Animal Center were the three top winners in the Terre Haute First National Bank Corporate Olympics. Sally Whitehurst was the coordinator of the event, which attracted teams from 40 businesses.

• Richard Willey opened The Athlete’s Foot in The Meadows shopping center.

• The city of Terre Haute began paving the streets of the newly annexed Woodridge subdivision.

• Union Hospital Health Group eliminated 22 of 226 management jobs as part of a plan to reduce the budget by $20 million by 2000.

• Jim Stone and Debbie Hunter made their debut as the new morning disc jockeys on WZZQ radio.

• Construction was under way at Decorating Den’s new strip mall at 380 W. Honey Creek Drive.

• Junior Achievement of the Wabash Valley sponsored go-kart races at the Terre Haute International Airport.

1983

• Paul J. Pfister, a local real estate agent since 1947, was named the Terre Haute Realtor of the Year by the Terre Haute Realtors Association.

• Meis Department Store opened a store in Meadows Center shortly after the downtown store at 624 Wabash Ave. closed. Other Meis stores were located at Plaza North Shopping Center and Honey Creek Square.

• Robert K. Larr was named division manager of WBAK-TV Channel 38.

• Vigo Circuit Judge Robert H. Brown ruled in favor of the city of Terre Haute to annex 300 acres of Honey Creek Township including Honey Creek Square.

• Sister Jean Knoerle, departing president of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, was elected the first president of the Alliance for Growth & Progress.

• Jerri Lynn Bowman, Miss Vigo County Fair 1983, was one of 10 finalists among 85 entrants at the Indiana State Fair queen pageant in Indianapolis.

• Gary Hosking won the Terre Haute City Junior Golf tournament at Rea Park. Charles Compton was the runner-up.

1958

• The Wabash River surged out of its banks during the Wabash Valley’s third flood of the year.

• The Terre Haute Common Council voted 7-2 for fluoridation of the city’s water. The next day, Mayor Tucker met with the group opposed to the issue and said he would study the matter.

• The Fairbanks Memorial Library bought its second bookmobile at a cost of $7,740.

• Officials and patrons of the new Metropolitan School District of West Vigo reviewed plans for their new high school at a meeting of the West Vigo School Improvement Council at the Valley High School gym.

• Jackie Thompson of Linton Township, Becky Kindred of Lost Creek Township, Rosemary St. John of Prairieton Township and Marilyn Kitch of Riley Township represented the Terre Haute District in the State 4-H Judging Contest.

• O’Day’s Drive-In Restaurant, 2643 Wabash Ave., celebrated its grand opening with steakburgers and shakes for sale at 9 cents each.
