Looking Back: 1958: Construction under way on Southland Shopping Center

1998
Ground breaking ceremonies were conducted for the Holly Arboretum Enhancement Project in Deming Park. From the first holly planting in September 1992, the collection had grown to 177 plants.
Vista Care purchased 21 hospice agencies from Vencor, Inc. including the Terre Haute operation at 3900 S. Seventh St.
Jim Poff announced Poff’s Sporting Goods, at 1323 Lafayette Ave., since 1948, would close in the fall. Poff’s southside store at 5021 U.S. 41 South would remain open.
Charles “Chuck” Walker, Vigo County Republican Party chair, resigned his office and withdrew his candidacy in the Indiana House District 43 race to move to a job in Iowa.
Multiple Madness, a gathering of parents of twins, triplets or higher order multiples, met for fellowship and support at the Child and Adolescent Services Division Building, 500 Eighth Ave., Gwenda Mitchell was the contact person.
Bob Menge was the new executive director of the United Way of the Wabash Valley.
Mike Payne and Vanessa Ellinger were the winners of the Terre Haute City Junior Golf championships.
1983
Queen Jerri Bowman reigned over the 54th Vigo County Fair.
The Hulman Links Clubhouse Development Committee, chaired by Eston “Bud” Perry, was working to raise private funds to cover the cost of the facility.
John R. Holdren, president of Conren, Inc. doing business as Great Scot food stores, announced the purchase of the former Topps Building, 2801 Wabash Ave., for a warehouse distribution center. The purchase was subject to a change in zoning.
The Terre Haute Food Co-Op, 1623 Poplar St., supplied wholesale foods to its members at the lowest prices possible. Laura Bakken and Joyce Gregory were the contact persons.
The statue of St. Anthony, which formerly stood at the front of St. Anthony Hospital in the 1000 block of South Sixth Street, was once again watching patients go past in its new location at Regional Hospital.
Alane Meis was appointed to serve on the board of the Indiana Arts Commission by Gov. Robert D. Orr.
An early morning fire in a Conrail boxcar, resulting in $20,000 damages, was ruled arson by investigators.
1958
Construction was under way on the Southland Shopping Center at South Seventh Street and Margaret Avenue.
Remodeling was complete at the Seaboard Finance Co. branch office, 2072 N. 13th St. in 12 Points. Armand Gottardi was the office manager.
The 730-acre Vigo Plant of Chas. Pfizer & Co. Inc. was purchased by the company from the federal government. Pfizer had operated the plant on a lease basis since 1947. During World War II, the property was part of an Army Ordnance installation.
Springwood Subdivision, located north of North Terre Haute on U.S. 41 and one-half mile east of Stop 16, staged an open house to show one of its colonial Fairlane homes. Down payments started at $350 with monthly payments of $71.
Lincoln Trail State Park, three miles south of Marshall, Ill., was dedicated.
Dr. and Mrs. Loy Hudson chaired the “Bar-B-Cruise” party at the Elks Fort Harrison Country Club. Dancing to the music of Bernie Haworth and his orchestra followed the outdoor barbecue.
