LOOKING BACK: 1958: The Methodist Church of Riley was presented ‘The Rural Church of the Year’

Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Terre Haute Tribune and Tribune-Star.

1998

• Amanda Gregory, a 1998 graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, was named queen to reign over th 59th annual Vigo County Fair.

• A StreetEasy Festival marked new life at 12 Points. The Red Onion restaurant was to reopen at 1228 Lafayette Ave. Sherrie Wilson and Jay Jones were restoring the 12 Points Hotel. And, Joe Anderson Jr. and Gloria J. Anderson opened a new convenience store and Citgo Gas Mart at 1280 Lafayette Ave.

• Green fees at Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute were cut from $25 to $12.50 through 1998. Steady rains, poor course conditions and increased green fees had contributed to a 13 percent decrease in revenue in June. Jim Peo was the course pro and Dave Alumbaugh the course superintendent.

• Other golf news included David McCampbell, five-time Terre Haute Men's City Golf champion winning his first Indiana PGA Open Championship, Ted Kaperak winning the Mini-City Golf Championship at Rea Park, and Tim Tennant claiming his second straight championship in the Elks Amateur played at the Fort Harrison Course.

1983

• Collett Park celebrated its 100th birthday with a parade of antique cars, music and a cake baked in the shape of the park pavilion.

• Greg Rusk, Terre Haute North Vigo High School student, won the top national award in general merchandising at the DECA competition in New Orleans.

• More than 60 members of the Terre Haute Bar Association conducted a memorial service for L. Eric Bauer in Vigo Circuit Court. Michael R. Ireland was the association president.

• The Downtown Clinic, a service of Planned Parenthood of the Wabash Valley, opened an office at 637 Cherry St.

• Gerald L. Brett, director of the Vigo County Planning Department, gave a brief history of local planning beginning with the 1947 state legislation allowing the counties to establish county plan commissions. Nothing had been done in Vigo County's unincorporated areas where dissension still existed.

• The Vigo County Commissioners traditionally had been in “continuous session,” but now established an official business meeting time on Mondays at 10 a.m.

1958

• The Methodist Church of Riley was presented “The Rural Church of the Year” award by the Town and Country church program of the Indiana Conference. Approximately 80 percent of the total number of Methodist churches in the state were located in towns of 2,500 population or under.

• Joe Francis chaired the fifth annual free fair sponsored by the Volunteer Firemen and Auxiliary at Prairieton. A dance floor with special music was a new attraction.

• Christ Lutheran of the American Lutheran Church, 24th and Poplar streets, celebrated its 20th anniversary in its present location. Warren Ping was chair of the congregation.

• The sixth annual Babe Ruth State Tournament opened at Memorial Stadium.

• A crowd estimated at 300 was participating each night in a series of prayers in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at the Carmelite Monastery in Allendale Place.

• Robert F. Prox and William M. Grimes were named to head the 1959 United Appeal Inc. campaign to raise funds for 23 Community Chest agencies and the American Red Cross.
