LOOKING BACK: 1983: The Star and Tribune newspapers merge into Tribune-Star

1998

• The Indiana Theatre, Ohio and Seventh streets, was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

• Ivy Tech State College graduated 337 students at its commencement in Hulman Center. Sister Barbara Doherty, president of St. Mary-of-the-Woods for the past 15 years, gave the commencement address.

• Goodwill Industries Inc. opened a second resale store in Terre Haute at 1699 Fort Harrison Road.

• The NBA named Larry Bird, Indiana State University All-American and Indianapolis Pacers coach, as their 1998 Coach of the Year.

• Minton’s USA Black Belt Academy, 3051 S. Third Place, sponsored a Kick-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

• The Carson & Barnes Five-Ring Circus performed on the Ivy Tech back parking lot. The Vigo County 4-H clubs hosted the event and received a portion of the ticket sales.

• J.D. Byrider, 5055 South U.S. 41, opened a second used-car lot at 1999 Fort Harrison Road.



1983

• The morning Star and afternoon Tribune newspapers merged into the morning Tribune-Star as of May 16.

• St. Patrick's School, 449 S. 19th St., celebrated its 100th anniversary. Originally housed at 131⁄2 and Poplar streets, the school had opened with 60 children and three Sisters of Providence as teachers. The present school building was completed in 1923.

• A Sunday performance of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra inaugurated the new band shell in Fairbanks Park. A crowd of 600 to 700 people attended despite the strong cold winds.

• The Indiana State University Sycamores won the Missouri Valley Conference baseball crown by defeating Southern Illinois 5-2 in the championship game at Wichita, Kan.

• About 70 men, women and children joined the local Moms for Peace march through Deming Park. Sylvia Conway, a member of the Wabash Valley Coalition for Peace and Justice, led the event.

• Charles and Carolyn Gurman of Terre Haute received the Negev Award for outstanding service to Israel and the local community at the United Hebrew Congregation Temple.



1958

• The Otter Creek Alumni Association honored the 60 graduating seniors of the Otter Creek High School Class of 1958 at its annual banquet at the William Penn Lodge, 2215 Garfield Ave.

• The Meadows shopping center celebrated its second anniversary.

• Paul’s Restaurant, 13th Street and Wabash Avenue, advertised midnight breakfast each Saturday. Russ McCoy entertained at the organ.

• Court House Furniture, Fourth Street and Wabash Avenue, was closing.

• The 65-piece Sarah Scott Junior High School Band, under the direction of Leslie Baine, opened the ceremony for the public open house at the Vigo County Historical Society’s new museum, 1411 S. Sixth St. The event attracted nearly 1,200 visitors.

• A new youth center for high-school students was to be open Friday nights at the Army Reserve Training Center, 401 Davis Ave. Officers and their wives were supervising the activity. Harold E. Bowsher was chairman of the Reserve board.

• The Junior Red Cross spring dinner was staged in the Hotel Deming and sponsored by the Inter-Council, with Fred Hord as president.
