    Northview’s Craig Trout and West Vigo’s Culley DeGroote tangled on Saturday afternoon in an Owen Valley Class 3A Sectional 28 battle of first-year head coaches.
    Trout and the Knights emerged with a 7-3 victory, and advance to the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Monday against Edgewood — a 9-2 winner over Brown Counter later on Saturday.

    Terre Haute runners won the 800 (South's Riley Stohler), the 1,600 (North's Peter Davis, in meet-record time) and the 3,200 (South's Jackson Bertoli, challenged at the end by teammate Spencer Danielson) as the Braves finished third as a team and the Patriots sixth.

    The longest races were the best ones for Vigo County athletes Thursday night at the Evansville Regional for boys high school track and field.

    North Central set the tempo in its first at-bat on Thursday and went on to defeat Linton 4-1 to win the Sullivan Class 2A softball championship.
    Sophomore Katelynn Kennedy socked a homer with two outs in the first inning and came on to pitch the final three innings to get her first save of the season.

    Pitching was generally good, defense ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime and a second straight seventh-inning rally made things interesting in Terre Haute North-Terre Haute South high school baseball Wednesday evening. But the ridiculous end of the defensive range gave the Patriots three gift runs early in Class 4A Sectional 12 action at South, and the Patriots used them and two long home runs to hold off the Braves 5-3.

  • Prep baseball: North vs. South to meet today in Class 4A sectional

    Terre Haute North begins its quest to repeat as Class 4A sectional baseball champion and fellow 19-win rival Terre Haute South stands in the Patriots’ way in today’s first-round battle at South.
    The Patriots will send senior ace Austin Hicks (4-2, 2.20 ERA) to the mound against South sophomore right-hander Logan Ames (5-3, 2.68 ERA) at 6 p.m.
    Hicks and Ames each picked up wins as North and South split two games earlier this season. Ames got plenty of support as the Braves jumped ahead 8-0 on their way to a 9-2 victory over North.

    There were a lot of nervous people around Clay City High School on Tuesday night, as the favored Eels had fallen behind 3-0 after two and a half innings against the motivationally-inspired Union Bulldogs.
    The nothing-to-lose Union squad had pounded out five hits in its first three at-bats to take the early lead, with Kolbi Reynolds getting two RBI singles.

    North Central defeated South Knox 2-1 on Tuesday in the first game of the Class 2A Sullivan Sectional for high school softball.
    The Thunderbirds will face the winner of the Eastern-North Knox game played Tuesday at 5 p.m. today. Sullivan meets Linton in the other semifinal contest.

    High school softball teams from Terre Haute South and Terre Haute North had several things in common as they entered Class 4A Plainfield Sectional play on Monday, solid 19-win seasons and lofty postseason goals among them. Unfortunately, by the time Monday ended the Braves and Patriots had a couple more things in common: uncharacteristic, maybe even unprecedented, defensive gaffes that put both teams in holes they couldn’t dig out of. South lost 11-1 in six innings to Brownsburg, North 7-1 to the host Quakers.

    Girls high school regional competition in both tennis and track and field is today, with Terre Haute North and Northview playing each other in a tennis semifinal at 5 p.m. at Crawfordsville and the athletes who qualified from the May 20 girls track sectional at North competing at 6:30 p.m. at Evansville Central.
