  • SPT050614 Nvbb moore.jpg Vikings prevail over Northview 6-4 in Big Four baseball

Baseball justice was meted out in unusual fashion Tuesday evening at Northview, where visiting West Vigo won 6-4 in Western Indiana Conference high school play by not hitting the ball very hard in its crucial inning — just after the host Knights failed to score by hitting the ball too hard.
In a tense game in which every little play had meaning, the Knights looked ready to break a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff walk, a bunt single and a sacrifice put runners at second and third with one out and the meat of the Northview batting order coming up.

  • SPT050114 NC SB mccoskey.jpg North Central softball keeps rolling, beating second Terre Haute team

Hitters were definitely ahead of the pitchers Thursday evening as Terre Haute South hosted North Central in nonconference high school softball.
With two teams entering the game with a combined 21-5 record, each of them starting a pitcher with an even better winning percentage — and with a howling wind and shivery temperatures seemingly the farthest thing from helpful to a batter’s swing — a snappy, 90-minute game with a final score of 1-0 or 2-1 wouldn’t have been surprising.
