West Vigo's 'young' team 2-0 after beating another WIC foe

Spencer — West Vigo coach Joe Boehler couldn’t ask for anything more of a young Viking basketball team than what they did the opening weekend of the season.

West Vigo completed the weekend sweep on Saturday night with a 46-35 victory over the host Owen Valley Patriots. Not only are the Vikings 2-0 on the year, they are 2-0 in the Western Indiana Conference.

“To have a young team and we open your season with two conference wins on the road, I’ve got to feel pretty pleased with that,” Boehler said.

West Vigo used a 15-0 run over the final four minutes of the first half and opening five of the second to build a 26-12 lead in a game where neither team shot or executed well.

Kyle Stewart, who led West Vigo with 16 points, scored eight points in the final 1:15 of the first half, hitting two 3s and a layup, as the Vikings took a 19-12 halftime lead.

“[Stewart’s] kind of like our little sparkplug. He plays so darn hard,” Boehler noted.

Stewart converted a steal into a layup and Aaron Kirby netted a basket that put West Vigo up 26-12 with 31⁄2 minutes left in the third quarter.

Owen Valley used a full-court press and the missed shots and turnovers it produced to cut West Vigo’s lead to 35-27 with 2:37 to play in the contest.

But over that final 2:37 Cade Lindsey scored eight of his 12 points and the Vikings hit 8 of 11 free throws to hold off the Patriots.

“To come over here on the second night, on the road in a conference game, and we knew it was going to be a grinder and it was the whole way … I was just proud of the fact our kids made plays down the stretch when we had to make plays, stepped up to the free throw line and we knocked down some free throws. When we had to get a stop we got a stop,” Boehler said.
