Casey boys take LIC tourney championship

Casey, Ill. — Casey defeated Newton 74-61 on Friday to win the Little Illini Conference tournament championship for the first time since 2004.

The Warriors scored the first four points of the game and led by as many as 15 points in the game to claim the title. Casey hiked its record to 14-5 and has accounted for two of Newton’s three defeats.

Casey had a 17-7 lead after eight minutes and scored eight straight points to go up 34-20 before Dylan Davidson hit three free throws to close the gap to 34-23 at halftime.

The Warriors had a 15-point lead in the third period and took a 50-40 lead into the final frame.

Newton cut the lead to nine in the final quarter, but Trivette Scales hit a 3-pointer for a 14-point lead before Davidson hit a trey but the Eagles got no closer in the contest.

Scales led the way for Casey with 20 points. Brandon Wolfe had 18, Matt McCown 17 points and seven rebounds and Zach Murphy tallied 10. Lucas Stone led Newton (20-3) with 19 points.
