TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South defeated Monrovia 75-68 on Saturday to earn a spot in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic consolation championship for the second straight year.

The Braves will face Casey at 2 p.m. Monday in their bid to win the consy honor again.

“That’s extra motivation for the players. I thought we brought some energy in the first half,” said South coach Scott Ridge after Saturday’s third game.

The teams were tied 13-13 after one period before the Braves closed the second period with a 10-2 run and held a 37-22 advantage at intermission.

South led by 20 points in the third quarter and took a 54-38 lead into the final period.

The Bulldogs outscored the Braves 30-21 in the final eight minutes and got within five points with 21.5 seconds to play. Kevaris Gregory hit four free throws to close out the scoring.

Gregory led the 5-6 Braves with 25 points and had three steals and three rebounds. He was 9-of-14 from the field with two 3-pointers, and was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

“Kevaris is emerging as a leader,” said Ridge.

Connor Shipley had 16 points for the winners and was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Jeffrey Turner and Timmy Herrin each nearly had double-doubles. Turner had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds and also had four steals while Herrin had eight points and 10 boards.

Logan Fite led 4-3 Monrovia with 23 points. Chase Casteel had a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Grant Burgess scored 15 points and Ross Bolton had 10.

“I would have liked for us to have kept our lead but Monrovia kept battling … they play hard and are well-coached,” said Ridge.

“We played hard and the players did the things we asked them to do today,” he added.

South was good on 26 of 60 shots and made 17 of 19 free throws. Monrovia was 24 of 54 from the field and 16 of 21 from the foul line.
