Marshall boys basketball pulls away from Martinsville

MARSHALL, ILL. — Marshall got back on the winning side of the ledger in boys high school basketball Tuesday night, defeating Martinsville 85-37 in McNary Gymnasium.

The Lions snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-3 for the season.

They were tied at 12-12 with the Bluestreaks after one period as their Clark County rivals were 4 of 5 from the field and took advantage of Marshall turnovers.

Zach Mulkins hit both of his shots, one a 3-pointer, and made three field goals to score eight of his 21 points in the period.

Marshall scored the first 11 points of the second stanza for a 23-12 lead and had a 42-16 lead at the half.

The Lions outscored the visitors 22-3 in the third canto with Mulkins hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Martinsville's only points. Taylor Maurer hit his first four shots in the quarter for Marshall and finishe with 10 of his team's points.

The Marshall senior had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds and added two steals.

Cray Bloodworth just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and he had five steals.

Drew Morris had 14 points, canning 4 of 5 3-pointers, and Keegan Steele tallied 12 points, making 3 of 5 treys.

Marshall connected on 32 of 62 shots and the Lions were good on 13 of 25 3-pointers and were 8 of 12 from the free-throw line.

Marshall coach Tom Brannan was pleased with the way his team played after the first quarter.

“We had seven turnovers and talked about taking care of the basketball. We played with confidence, made shots and held Martinsville to seven points in the second and third quarters,” said the veteran coach.

“We needed this one. I hope we can build on it,” he said.

Marshall lost to Casey last Tuesday and dropped a close game at undefeated Flora on Friday.

“We got thumped by Casey … and the kids responded against Flora and lost a gut-wrenching game,” said Brannan.

Mulkins had 21 points, eight boards and four steals for the 0-7 Bluestreaks as four players went the distance for the team.

Marshall hits the road again Friday to play Little Illini Conference foe Olney. The Lions defeated Olney in the Capital Classic but Brannan said the the team “will be tough” on its home court.
