TERRE HAUTE — Foul-plagued Terre Haute South got 27 points from senior Jeffrey Turner, but the host Braves couldn’t prevent taller Lawrence North from scoring almost at will in an 87-69 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference loss in boys high school basketball Friday night.

Actually, Lawrence North committed more fouls — 25-22 — than South. But the timing of the Braves’ fouls, when the game was still relatively close, had a bigger impact on the outcome.

Only reserve Spence Tofaute fouled out, but three South teammates somehow managed to avoid a fifth foul after picking up their fourth in the third quarter.

“We’re just a little young and inexperienced,” South coach Scott Ridge told the Tribune-Star afterward. “When we got in foul trouble, we weren’t ready for the [defensive] pressure. We had four regulars with four fouls, so we were putting JV [junior varsity] kids against one of the most athletic teams in the state.

“Our effort was there. We’ve just go to clean up some things and try to get a win [tonight] against Mooresville.”

The Wildcats — whose starting front liners went 6-8, 6-7 and 6-7 — jumped ahead 5-0 on a 3-pointer and fielder by Basil Smotherman. A pair of treys by Kevaris Gregory late in the first period pulled the home team within 15-12 heading into the second period.

South seized a temporary advantage at 17-15 early in the second frame after a third trifecta by Gregory and an inside bucket by substitute Conner Shipley. Another basket by Shipley tied the score at 19-19 with 5:58 to go in the half, then Lawrence North rattled off 12 unanswered points — including two 3s and a driving basket by Sean Howard — to take a 31-19 lead.

Coach Jack Keefer’s Wildcats padded their cushion to 34-25 by halftime, despite hitting only 1 of 8 free-throw attempts.

The visitors outscored South 29-16 in the third quarter to pretty much secure the outcome. Turner tallied seven of his points in the third period and 16 in the fourth to provide late offensive entertainment for the home crowd.

Gregory chipped in with 15 points for the Braves.

Lawrence North’s high scorers were Smotherman with 17 points, Howard with 14 and John McCloud with 13.
