Attack mode: TH South finds scoring touch, reaches Tip-Off Tournament semifinals

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South’s girls basketball knew it would have a mix of experienced players and youngsters. What South hoped it had was a mix of scoring options as well.

The Braves were happy to see their hopes come to fruition on Wednesday against Northview in the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tipoff Classic. South won 61-38.

North Central won the nightcap 54-47 over Owen Valley. The Braves and Thunderbirds will meet in one semifinal at 8 p.m. tonight. Terre Haute North and West Vigo will meet in the other at 6:30 p.m. Owen Valley and Northview will play at 5 p.m. in a consolation game.

n South 61, Northview 38 – Eight different Braves scored in South's victory. The Braves proved adept at scoring in transition, in the paint and via jump shooting.

“You never whose going to be our leading scorer. That’s going to make it harder for our opponents because you never know who's going to step up. We definitely have a nice mixture. We couldn't have played a better game,” South coach Cara Stuckey said.

South guard Lauren Perrelle led all scorers with 16 points, 10 of which were scored in a 22-13 second quarter that proved decisive for the Braves. Freshman point guard Kennedy Williams had an impressive debut with 11 points and her quickness gave the Knights problems.

Northview had trouble getting any clean shots off early and Northview coach Scott Buell lamented the Knights’ inability to get into their intended offensive or defensive plan.

“It was a snowball that kept getting bigger and bigger. We couldn't get a shot and their defense was causing us some havoc,” Buell said. “I was disappointing in us. We didn't do anything we've been working on. We couldn’t have played much worse in the first half.”

South's defense proved too tough a nut to crack for the Knights. Northview was never comfortable in its half-court offense and it showed in the shooting percentage as the Knights shot 1 of 8 in the opening period. South led 14-5 after the first quarter.

The Braves broke it open in the second quarter thanks to the shooting of Perrelle and the quickness of Williams. Perrelle made two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws in a 15-2 South run that made it 29-9. Perrelle went on to score 10 points in the period.

Williams, a freshman and daughter of former South star Rowdy Williams, impressed with her ability to get ahead of Northview defenders on the break.

She scored seven in the period and gave evidence of a bright future.

"You're not going to find anyone who works harder than Kennedy. She's been awesome from day one.No one puts in more hours than she does. Her hard work has paid off and she's going to be good for us. Her job was take care of the ball and she did a great job tonight," Stuckey said.

Northview played better in the second half,  but South's second quarter surge proved too much to overcome.

n North Central 54, Owen Valley 47 -- The Thunderbirds weathered the storm and advanced to today's semifinal against South.

The Thunderbirds (1-0) out-hustled the Patriots in the first half. A 12-1 run wrapped around the first and second quarters gave the Thunderbirds an 18-9 lead. North Central would lead by nine at halftime and its advantage peaked at 13 early in the third quarter.

But the Thunderbirds got complacent and sloppy and Owen Valley (0-1) whittled away at its deficit at the free throw line. The Patriots scored just one field goal in the third quarter, but still managed to outscore North Central 18-10 in the third period. By the end of the third quarter, North Central's advantage was just 33-32.

Owen Valley took a 34-33 lead on a Zaine Bucy jumper to start the fourth quarter. The Patriots surged to a 38-34 advantage with 6:36 left.

But then North Central re-asserted itself and Owen Valley turnovers -- the Patriots had 28 overall -- were fatal. North Central's re-took the lead on a Katelynn Kennedy bucket at 4:28 and a 3-pointer by Gabby Kreischer at 2:52 put the Thunderbirds up 45-39. North Central sealed the victory at the free throw line.

A total of 75 free throws were attempted in the foul-marred game. Owen Valley was 26 of 33 and North Central was 24 of 42 at the line.

Owen Valley's Alicia Wilson led all scorers with 21. She also had nine steals. Kreischer led the Thunderbirds with 15. Taylor Netherlain added 10.

n Greencastle 55, South Vermillion 36 -- The Tiger Cubs took command in the first quarter and never let go of the reins in a consolation victory over the Wildcats.

Alex Basile led Greencastle (1-1) with 16 points. Lauren Bridgewater added 10. Taylor Andrew paced the Wildcats (0-2) with 10 points.

Maybe they should play this at Valle Field. It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.

  • SPT 062814 DANE RUPSKA.jpg Gold surprises Black 35-12 in WVFCA All-Star Game

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
