PREP ROUNDUP: No. 4 Terre Haute South tennis suffers first loss

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South ran afoul of leg cramps Saturday in suffering its first high school tennis loss of the season at the Braves Invitational, while Terre Haute North maintained its unbeaten streak in its own tournament at the other end of town.

The fourth-ranked Braves host the Patriots on Tuesday. North also has a home match Monday against West Vigo.

Krishan Kumar didn’t lose a game in three victories as South beat Greencastle and Roncalli, then lost 3-2 to 11th-ranked Evansville Memorial when one doubles team lost a tiebreaker and the other was forced to default.

South also had a perfect 8-0 junior varsity record for the day.

North’s lineup went undefeated for the day as the Patriots easily outscored Indianapolis Chatard, Southport and Northview.

Cross country

• Eagle Classic — At Nashville, the three VIgo County schools plus Northview and North Central were among more than 40 schools competing at Brown County’s Eagle Classic.

Terre Haute South, still without Jackson Bertoli, placed fifth with Terre Haute North 10th and Northview 15th in the boys Class AA race, while West Vigo was sixth and North Central 21st in Class A competition.

In girls races, North was fifth, South 11th and Northview 17th among the big schools, West Vigo 12th and North Central 15th in the Class A race.

Career-best efforts were run by Peter Davis and Caleb Paauwe of the North boys (as well as Tyler Nemeth of North in the junior varsity race) and Katie Schmidt of the South girls. Freshman Devon Zeck was the top finisher among North’s girls.

Coach Tom Dever of North also pointed out that his boys team averaged 32 seconds better per man than it had in the same race a year ago.
