MARSHALL, ILL. —
Marshall teams posted twin victories in Illinois high school diamond action Thursday against visiting Cumberland.
In baseball, the Lions bested the Pirates 12-3 in their season opener. In softball, Marshall knocked off Class 1A’s preseason No. 1 team 5-3.
Cumberland took a 3-0 lead in the first baseball frame with Holden Elwood socking a two-run homer. That turned out to be the end of the scoring for the Pirates, also opening their season.
The Lions put three on the board in the second stanza to gain a tie. Drew Morris drove in two of the runs and starting pitcher Dalton Hefner drove in the first tally.
Marshall plated four runs in the third to take control of the contest and ended up scoring at least one run in each of the remaining innings.
Ryan Sanders drove in two of the four runs in the third.
Morris led the Marshall offense with three hits. Sanders and Keegan Steele each had two hits and Steele drove in two runs.
Eli Stover worked four innings to get the the mound decision.
“The pitchers were all on a pitch count. Eli did a great job of throwing strikes. He only threw 50 pitches,” said coach Chris Kesler.
Kesler is in his 11th season as coach of the Lions and has four starters back from last year’s team that won the Little Illini Conference title for the fifth time in six seasons.
“I thought we hit the ball well and had good at-bats, moving runners. The thing I was happiest about, I thought we were really aggressive on the base paths,” said the coach.
The Lions will be at Tri-County today and return home to face Casey on Saturday with the varsity game, beginning at 11 a.m. CDT.
“We’re kinda old but don’t have a lot of players who have played a lot,” said Kesler.
Marshall played errorless ball in the opener and turned a double play.
