West Vigo picks up homecoming victory

WEST TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo’s homecoming atmosphere had faded since Friday night, but momentum from its high school football clash with Edgewood continued immediately Saturday afternoon and the result was a 26-8 Western Indiana Conference victory for the Vikings.

Lightning postponed action early in the third quarter Friday, with West Vigo leading 20-0, so the matchup resumed Saturday with the Vikings forcing Edgewood to punt. Then on their first possession, Jacob Creasey scampered 74 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown to increase their margin to 26-0.

“They’d been stacking the box the whole game,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb explained. “So we knew if we could get outside on them, that could go. Jacob got a great block from [wide receiver] Tyler Gustafson. It was a decleater. That kinda sprung him.”

“Coach Cobb does a good job and they put a little motion in on that play and cracked our [line]backer,” Edgewood coach Jerry Bland mentioned. “Then [Creasey] got out on the perimeter. That was a good call by them. We’ve got to learn to play that a little better.”

In the final minute of the third period, the Mustangs from Ellettsville avoided the shutout by scoring on a 15-yard TD run by Michael Bowman and adding a 2-point conversion run by Derek Driver.

Neither squad put a dent on the scoreboard in the final frame. Counting Friday and Saturday action, Danny Creasey ended up as West Vigo’s leading rusher with 107 yards on 20 totes and Jacob Creasey chipped in with 88 yards on the ground on only eight attempts.

Still, Cobb was not particularly pleased with the Vikings’ offensive performance Saturday.

“Having the two-day game, so to speak … I was worried about how the kids would come out,” he said. “That [Creasey TD run] took a little pressure off. That was really the only bright spot we had offensively in the second half. I was kinda disappointed in our offensive-line play and we missed some assignments at our receiver positions.

“I thought our defense played well. But offensively today, I was not happy with how they responded, other than the one play by Jacob Creasey.”

West Vigo built its first-half advantage Friday on touchdowns by Chris Neidlinger (12-yard pass from Jimmy Maples), Danny Creasey (30-yard run) and Gustafson (37-yard pass from Maples).

From the Edgewood perspective, Bland thought officials, players and coaches dealt with the weather delay the best they could.

“We’re getting used to it this season, I guess,” he said. “Both teams, second time [the first delay occurring two weeks ago]. You never know how they’re going to respond. I think it’s one of those things where you’ve got to get in a couple of series before you kinda wake up and get back in the groove. But I thought we handled it OK.”

Bowman paced the Mustangs’ offense with 111 yards rushing on 17 carries.

  • SPT 062814 DANE RUPSKA.jpg Gold surprises Black 35-12 in WVFCA All-Star Game

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
