TERRE HAUTE —
The postseason begins for high school girls golf teams Saturday with sectional play schedule around the state.
Nine teams will vie for honors at the Northview Sectional to be played at Forest Park. Three teams and three individuals not on those teams will qualify for the Roncalli Regional next week.
Based on season results, the host team, Terre Haute North and South should vie for the championship. North won last year with South second and Northview third.
In a match played at Forest Park last month, South won with 174 points followed by Northview with 175 and North with 179.
South senior Alexandra Pickens was medalist with 36 while North senior Nicole Anderson was second low with 39 and Keirsten Mikesell led the Knights with 41.
In the 2011, Pickens and Anderson tied for fourth, both shooting 85, and are the top returning finishers.
Anna Potter of North and Megan Heaton of Northview are two other returnes. They each shot 89 to tie for seventh.
South coach Cara Stuckey says her team has exceeded her expectations. She says chipping and putting will be keys to success on Saturday.
North coach Abe Nasser Jr. says South should be favored.
“We hope to make it out. If not, it's not the end of the world. It's been that kind of year. It will be good experience for our young players,” he said.
Other teams in the area will be at other sectionals:
• Linton, North Central and Sullivan will be in the North Daviess Sectional to be played at Country Club of Old Vincennes.
Vincennes Rivet will be one of the top teams in this tournament.
• Cloverdale, Owen Valley and White River Valley are in the Martinsville Sectional to be played at Foxcliff.
Martinsville and Center Grove are the top teams in this one.
