North pulls away in second half to beat South in girls soccer sectional

Spencer Grim scores two goals for Patriots

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North blitzed host Terre Haute South with three second-half goals in a span of four minutes and 35 seconds Thursday night, emerging with a hard-fought 4-0 win in the Class 2A Terre Haute South girls soccer sectional semifinal match.

The Patriots earned a spot in Saturday’s 7 p.m. championship match against a Northview team that wasn’t quite as pressed. The Knights beat Owen Valley 10-0 — after defeating the same team 10-1 in the regular season — and outshot the other Patriots 54-3.

North’s Patriots should be a stiffer test for the Knights — it was 5-1 North during the regular season, according to Northview coach Aaron Crawn — but the Braves showed immediately Thursday that they were a different team than the one that lost 5-0 in the traveling trophy match.

“South played great,” acknowledged North coach Kyle Baker, “and in the first half [the Braves] were fantastic. They caught us off-guard with their high trap [defensive alignment], and we kind of froze up.”

The Braves nearly scored on a long ball early. “It went right off [goalkeeper Brooke Frederick’s] fingers, and that was a big save for them,” coach Dave Drake of the Braves said afterward. “We had to get a goal up to save this thing.”

North still managed the early lead on a Spencer Grim goal in the 30th minute, but it was just 1-0 at intermission and the Braves came out fired up in the second half again.

It was looking like a nail-biter until the second period neared its midpoint. Then disaster struck for South.

First it was a pass by Grim that somehow got through South’s defenders to be sent home by Libby Ward. Not long after that, Abby Howes sent a long ball from near midfield to a streaking Michaela Schuld, who converted it for a 3-0 lead. Just 68 seconds after that, a quick throw-in by Howes got to Grim on her way to the goal, and Grim eluded the defense for the finish that made it 4-0.

“We didn’t adjust [to South’s defense] in the first half,” Baker noted later. “We wanted to get in quickly behind their back line, and we came out in the second half with a little urgency. Once we got [North defenders’ heads turned] we were OK.”

“We just lost mental composure for a few minutes,” Drake said.

Hannah Minor, Melissa Lummis and Libby Deckard were too much for Owen Valley in the first match, although the Knights didn’t get off to the start they had achieved in the regular-season match.

“We were playing a little sloppy early,” said Crawn, whose team had scored eight times in the first 19 minutes in the previous match with Owen Valley. “Then we finally decided to show up. We got better as the game went along.”

The North-Northview regular-season game “was pretty lopsided,” Crawn admitted, “but that was at the very beginning of the season.”

  • SPT 062814 DANE RUPSKA.jpg Gold surprises Black 35-12 in WVFCA All-Star Game

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
