MONTGOMERY — Terre Haute North is going back to the state finals in boys high school golf for the first time in more than 10 years.

The Patriots qualified for a trip to The Legends Course next week by tying for third in the Washington Regional at Country Oaks Golf Club and advancing with the better fifth score.

Avon was the winner with 296 and Evansville Memorial took second with 301. North and Brownsburg each shot 304 to tie for third and North earned the final team qualifying slot with Evan Perdiew’s 82, three shots better than the 85 recorded by Kasey Cross of Brownsburg.

North shot the same score in the sectional played Monday at Phil Harris Course, tying Terre Haute South for first place, and took team honors with its fifth score then.

Mooresville shot 308, nipping Greencastle with 309 for fifth. Sullivan shot 320 and placed 11th while Terre Haute South carded 334 for 13th.

Junior Adam LaGrange paced North with 1-over-par 73 with four birdies, and his score was the final one posted.

“Down the stretch, you just try to make as many putts as you can. You have to leave it all out there. I feel I did that,” he said.

Sam Pollock had 74, Ryan Baker 76 and Andrew Behnke 81 to round out the North scoring. All three are seniors and all are going to Franklin College.

“When Ryan and I started playing [as freshmen], the team was not very good. We just progressively got better. We thought we could do it [today] and did it. Everybody played well,” said Pollock.

Abe Nasser Jr. is the coach of the Patriots.

“I can’t be more proud of these guys. We knew it was possible [to go to state] ... it was about a seven-team tournament for one spot. I have to remind them every single day how important every single shot is and how it can matter at the end of the day,” he said.

Luke Brotherton paced Greencastle and tied for second low medalist with 70, having the low nine-hole score of 32. He was 7-under-par at one time.

“I had seven birdies. I used the wrong club on [one] hole and three-putted the last one,” said Brotherton.

Greencastle has its top four players back next season and lost only to Plainfield in nine-hole matches this year. “They all played well. They were very consistent,” said coach Steve Paquin.

Nathan Pirtle had 74 and Colt Kuppler 75 to pace Sullivan, which has all of its players back next season. “This was a great experience for our team competing in the strong field. We’ll look forward to returning next year. … We need to play a lot of golf this summer,” said Sullivan coach Doug Boyd.

Junior Dylan Meyer of Evansville Central was medalist, shooting 35-34 for 69 with four birdies. He said his best score this season had been a 68 at Country Oaks. He has already committed to Illinois for college.

Brotherton, Mark Whipple of Avon and Landon Smith of Evansville North tied for second at 70 and Baylor Payne of Martinsville had 71 for fifth.

Five players shot 72 to tie for the fifth individual qualifying slot in the state. Brady Sappenfield of Mooresville won the playoff.

Will Martin of North Vermillion was low for the individual qualifiers from the area with 75. Clayton French of Linton shot 76, Cole Bradbury of Linton 79, Koye Kaiser of Linton 80 and Rockville junior Andrew Weisheit 83.

The state finals will be played Tuesday and Wednesday. This year, all 15 teams and all individual qualifiers will play both days.
