Greencastle ousts West Vigo without run

WEST TERRE HAUTE — There is no doubt West Vigo played better Friday against No. 4-ranked Greencastle in the Class 3A Sectional 21 than it did in the regular season.

Through three quarters, the Vikings held the visiting Tiger Cubs to 28 rushing yards.

But Greencastle took away a 35-0 victory over the Vikings and advanced to the second week of the 40th annual IHSAA football tournament at Jay Barrett Field.

“We’ve come a long way [this season], and unfortunately tonight we ran out of kids. We had several kids banged up in the Sullivan game. That was an emotional, physical game like it always is. These kids have fought all year. They are conference champs and from where they started they’ve turned 180 degrees. We’re proud of them,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb said.

“We played a conference championship team tonight and they are much improved. Watch out for them. They are going to be pretty darn good next year,” Greencastle coach Josh Buis said.

West Vigo, which lost to Greencastle 44-0 the second week of the season, held the Tiger Cubs to just 61 rushing yards.

“You have to throw the ball against them. They have everybody and their brother in the box. Its cover [defense] zero every single down. We’re fortunate enough to have a quarterback who can complete some balls,” Buis said.

Greencastle quarterback Nick Gilliam completed 16 of 29 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores.

West Vigo had 56 yards of total offense against a Greencastle defense that has allowed just 14 points this season. It was the Tiger Cubs’ eighth shutout win in 10 games.

Greencastle led 14-0 at halftime, then broke the game open in the third quarter when Tanner Nicholson took a Gilliam pass 51 yards for a touchdown and 21-0 lead. The Tiger Cubs took a 28-0 lead when Thomas Bollman blocked punt in the end zone and Dustin Williams recovered the ball for a touchdown.

West Vigo started the night beat up and it only got worse. By the end of the first quarter Jacob Creasey was on the sideline with an injury. Maples’ night came to an end in the third quarter after he was sacked. Daniels Creasey, who started the night play only defense because of a shoulder injury, finished the game at quarterback.

Greencastle scored its final touchdown on a one-yard keeper by Gilliam with 3:03 left in the game.
