WEST TERRE HAUTE — Hayden Corenflos was not the tallest player on the court Tuesday night, but he was always close to the rim while leading West Vigo to a 50-36 victory over visiting South Vermillion in boys high school basketball inside the Green Dome.

Corenflos scored 21 points without taking a shot from outside the lane in the Vikings’ second win of the season.

The Vikings’ victory gave West Vigo a sweep in the Western Indiana Conference doubleheader. The Vikings’ girls team overpowered the Wildcats 50-31 in the first game of the night.

Corenflos, who also pulled down seven rebounds, was backed by Braiden Cardinal 14 points and seven boards. The Vikings also got six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots out of 6-6 freshman Austin Sappingfield.

South Vermillion did not have a score in double figures. Aaron Hines led the Wildcats with eight points.

South Vermillion also finished the game without senior guard Jordan Branz, who injured a knee at the end of the third period.

Cardinal’s second three-pointer of the first quarter gave West Vigo an 11-8 lead after the first period. The Wildcats’ Branz and Hines converted two Viking turnovers into baskets and a brief 12-11 lead in the opening minute of the second quarter.

Led by the 6-1 Corenflos, West Vigo went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. Corenflos started the run with a three-point play. Corenflos added another inside basket, then Cardinal netted two points. Two more buckets by Corenflos on layups put the Vikings up 22-14 with 3:05 left in the first half.

A fastbreak layup by Corenflos gave the Vikings a 28-20 halftime lead.

West Vigo outscored South Vermillion 10-5 in the third period to stretch the lead to 38-25 going into the final eight minutes of the game.

Once the lead hit 42-14, coach Joe Boehler put the Vikings into a spread offense. The Vikings’ lead reached 48-27 with 4 minutes left.

While the Vikings shot 43 percent (21 of 48) from the floor, the Wildcats struggled with 29 percent (16 of 54) shooting.

The West Vigo girls moved to 5-2 on the year a 2-0 in the WIC with the win over South Vermillion.

The Vikings took a 9-4 lead in the first quarter, holding the Wildcats scoreless 7 minutes and eight seconds. The Shyanne Elkins put West Vigo up 20-4 with an offensive rebound in the second quarter before South Vermillion’s Carlie Johnson scored to end the drought.

South Vermillion led 27-15 at halftime and extended the margin to 36-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Lexus Elkins and Kylie Cardinal led the Vikings with 10 points each, while South Vermillion was paced by Johnson with seven points.
