ELLETTSVILLE — Ice cream was enough of a reward Monday night after the West Vigo Vikings beat eight-time defending champion Edgewood 6-2 in extra innings in the opening game of the Class 3A softball sectional at Edgewood High School. But that’s not what Vikings want.

“This team this year has what it takes to take this whole [sectional]. We just got to get by pitch by pitch, inning by inning and game by game. That last inning is the team I’ve been waiting for them to be the entire time. We got big hits when we needed them, we never got down and every single girls contributed to that win,” West Vigo coach Cherish Easton said.

West Vigo (15-11) will play Brown County at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals of Class 3A Sectional 28 at Edgewood High School. Brown County defeated Greencastle 13-0 in game two on Monday.

Brown County beat West Vigo twice during the reason season and the two teams shared the WIC title.

“We’re ready. These girls want it. We’ve been talking about this all season. We shared the WIC and we don’t want to share this. We can’t share [sectional championship], so they are going to come back [Tuesday] ready to play,” Easton said.

South Vermillion plays Owen Valley in the second game on Tuesday. The championship contest is 6 p.m. Thursday.

Brittany Voils led West Vigo’s 10-hit attack three hits, including two doubles. Baylee Waters also went 3-4 at the plate. Winning pitcher Leah Morrison had three RBI for the game, including a two-run homer.

West Vigo led 2-0 going into the seventh inning. Edgewood, the Class 3A state runner-up last year and winner of eight straight sectional titles, took advantage of two Vikings errors and tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

If the errors were from nerves, the Vikings didn’t show it at the plate in the top of the eighth.

Jacy McClain led off with a single and scored when Baylee Waters hit a double into the left-field gap. McClain scored the go-ahead run, but Waters was thrown out trying to reach third base.

Edgewood errors put Shelby Edington on second base and she came around to score on Brittany Voils second double of the game, giving the Vikings a 4-2 lead.

“It’s amazing. After all our hard work we deserve [the win],” Voils said.

But it was Morrison, the surprise starter and winning pitcher, who punctuated the night with her first home run of the season over the center field fence.

“I was crying rounding second base. It’s amazing,” Morrison said.

West Vigo’s Easton surprised everyone starting Morrison over staff ace Hannah Harden. Morrison went seven innings, scattered six Edgewood hits, gave up two unearned runs, struck out three and did not give up a walk.

“I was very nervous. It was shocking,” Morrison said.

“Leah does a great job. She had to prove herself to us this year. She started out earlier in the season and didn’t have a lot of confidence and we built that over this season. She definitely proved herself tonight. She threw a great game and she came through with that home run,” Easton said.

Harden, who will go to the mound Tuesday rested, pitched the eighth inning, where the Vikings turned a double play to end the game and Edgewood’s eight-year rule.
