Mother Nature put Sullivan’s quest for a high school baseball sectional championship on hold Monday night at Linton-Stockton High School.
Sullivan (14-15) and Eastern Greene (16-7) will resume play in the Class 2A Sectional 47 championship game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Linton’s Roy Herndon Field.
With Eastern Greene leading 5-0 in the fifth inning, umpires cleared the field due to heavy rain and then lightning.
Sullivan, seeking its first sectional title since 1993, had one hit off Eastern’s Carter Divine through four innings. Kyler Wood had a second inning single for the Arrows only hit.
Eastern Greene scored four runs in the bottom of the first winning on four hits and Sullivan error. The Thunderbirds made it 5-0 in the third.
Sullivan reached the championship game by beating North Central 10-3 Monday morning, while Eastern Greene upset defending champion Linton 3-2.
Sullivan hasn’t won a high school baseball sectional since 1993. The Golden Arrows moved into position Monday afternoon to end that streak. And there will be a new winner in the Class 2A Sectional 47 at Linton.
Sullivan outslugged county rival North Central 10-3 in the first semifinal game and Eastern Greene knocked off three-time defending champion and tournament host Linton 3-2 in the second game.
Sullivan put 13 hits together with five North Central errors to break open this county rivalry in the fifth and sixth innings.
Sullivan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a double steal, Luke McPhail coming home when Johnathan Cox stole second base.
North Central took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Luke Copeland hit a two-run home run.
The Golden Arrows took the lead for good with a three-run third inning rally started by Cameron McNeely’s single. Tucker Smith singled and Cody Turner and Camdon Kuppler delivered back-to-back doubles.
Sullivan had one run in the fourth and broke the game open with two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
“The bottom of our order has been clicking the second half of the year. I’ve got confidence in our kids throughout the order and it’s just a matter of time when we’re going to start clicking when we see [a pitcher] two or three times,” coach Matt McLaren said.
Smith and Cox led Sullivan’s 13-hit offense with three each, while Kuppler had two doubles and McPhail two singles.
North Central was led by Luke Copeland with three hits, including two doubles.
n Eastern 3, Linton 2 — Linton could not get the timely hit against Eastern Greene, the last team to win Sectional 47 before the Miners started their reign.
Linton had the tying run on third base when Eastern’s Gage Shell retired three straight Miners on a bunt and two fly balls to end the game.
Linton took a 1-0 lead in the first when Abram Neff singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Aspen Taylor.
Eastern scored three runs on three hits in the third inning.
Taylor led Linton with two singles.
