TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo broke into the victory column in high school girls basketball Thursday night, defeating Clay City 63-54 in overtime.

TheVikings rebounded from Tuesday’s 20-point defeat against White River Valley to get their first win in four starts. Clay City is 1-2.

Lexus Elkins hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining for a 52-52 tie and sent the game into overtime.  West Vigo outscored the Eels 11-2 in the extra session with Shelby Byrley hitting a bucket at the outset and Charity Lane following with a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 57-52 lead.

Logan Ellinger canned two free throws for Clay City’s only points and the Vikings hit six free throws to close out the scoring.

Lexus Elkins had a career night for the winners with 16 points, 15 rebounds and two steals. She probably also had an assist or two.

Other Vikings in double figures were McKenzie Little with 13 and Brittany Voils with 12; Shyanne Elkins pulled down 11 rebounds for the winners.

Ellinger led the Eels with 14 points. Alisha Steward tallied 13 before fouling out in overtime and Alex Wolfe scored 10 before fouling out in the fourth period. Wolfe also had nine rebounds while Mahayle Durga, Steward and Ellinger each had seven.

West Vigo had a 7-4 lead after one period but the Eels outscored the Vikings 16-11 in the second stanza — leading by eight at one time — and had a 20-18 advantage at the break.

The Eels maintained that lead going into the final stanza, leading  33-31. The game was tied four times before Little hit a 3-pointer to give the Vikings their first lead of the second half at 44-43.

Freshman Kylie Cardinal got a steal and a bucket to put the host team up 48-46 and Lexus Elkins’ bucket with less than a minute gave the Vikings a 50-48 lead.

Callie Dayhuff hit a free throw to make it 50-49 and Steward’s trey with less than 10 seconds left put the Eels up 52-50, setting the stage for Elkins’ game-tying free throws.

“It was a total team effort to bounce back from Tuesday’s game. It’s a step in the right direction. Lexus was unbelievable,” said West Vigo coach Ryan Easton.
