WEST TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo was a winner in Western Indiana Conference and Big Four Classic high school softball Tuesday as it defeated Northview 4-1.

West Vigo came back from losing a tough game Monday to even its record at 7-7 and improve to 3-1 in th WIC.

The Vikings took advantage of Northview’s only errors of the game to score four unearned runs in the third inning and Hannah Harden scattered eight hits — one a homer by Taylor Carter — to prevail. Carter allowed just five hits and struck out 11 batters in defeat.

Baylee Waters beat out an infield hit to get the West Vigo third inning started and Jacy McClain followed with a single after Waters stole second base. Mary Curley reached on an error to load the bases and Shelby Edington’s infield hit was muffed as the first two runs of the game scored.

Leah Morrison’s solid two-out double brought in the final two runs of the frame.

Carter slammed her sixth homer of the season to lead off the Northview fourth frame and Hope Torbert followed with a single before West Vigo’s double play cleared the bases before Lindsey Potter singled. Harden then got Madison Nevins to ground out to end the inning.

“It was a great win for us. We’ve had a lot of tough losses. We were in most of the games we have lost where one play or one hit could have made the difference. The girls were tired of losing those games,” said West Vigo coach Cherish Easton.

“Hannah pitched well. When she hits her spots, she is tough. Carter is a tough hitter and tough pitcher,” she added.

“It was another frustrating game for us.” Northview coach Bethany Jones said. “Defensively, we didn’t have it. Errors have hurt us in some games.”

Carter had two hits for the Knights, now 9-7 and 1-1 in the conference, and Jacy McClain had two hits for the Vikings.

Both teams have busy schedules coming up; both play on the road Thursday, have games Friday and face the other Big Four teams Saturday.

“We have six games this week and six next week,” said Easton.
