Evansville North standout derails West Vigo's hopes early

Darmstadt — One player shouldn’t be the difference in a 33-point high school basketball game, but Evansville North’s Jaylen Chambers was in that situation Saturday night against visiting West Vigo.

The 5-foot-11 senior only finished with 21 points and six rebounds — both game-high totals -- but his impact loomed greater as the host Huskies cruised to a 70-37 win.

By halftime, Chambers had 17 points -- the Vikings had 13 at that point -- and had hit 6 of 8 field goal attempts. The rest of his teammates shot 27 percent in the first two quarters, almost identical to West Vigo’s percentage.

So without Chambers, it was an even game. Instead, however, the Vikings trailed 34-13 after a disastrous 1-point second quarter, and nothing that happened in the second half was very important after that.

“[The Huskies are] a very good basketball team,” coach Joe Boehler of the Vikings said afterward. “They probably had us outmatched at just about every position on the floor, and on top of that we didn’t play very well. That’s just a bad recipe.”

West Vigo had a 7-6 lead with 3:05 left in the first period after Adrien Corenflos hit his second 3-pointer of the game, but Chambers answered with a 3-pointer of his own, then went coast to coast with a defensive rebound.

Grant Daley scored for West Vigo, but the home team got four more points to complete a 9-2 run and led the rest of the way.

Reserve Drew Watters of the Huskies had the last basket of his team’s first-quarter spurt, and he scored the first five points of the second period to build North’s lead to 20-12. Chambers added a 3-pointer, then a three-point play, and the game was basically out of reach.

“At the end of the first quarter [with the score 15-12] we were right there in the game,” Boehler noted, “but then we made some mental mistakes. We had a couple of turnovers back-to-back-to-back and we didn’t rebound particularly well.”

As their deficit got bigger, the Vikings seemed to get less patient, which didn’t help things. By the time Lance Stonebarger hit a free throw with 1:27 left in the half, West Vigo trailed 31-13 and the Vikings never got closer than 20 points in the second half.

Chambers was complemented by Watters and his 14 points, by freshman guard C.J. Hedgepeth with 10 points and five assists and by active 6-7 sophomore post Austin Elmore. Elmore had just four points and four rebounds, but was active defensively -- four steals, three blocks and at least one charge drawn.

Adrien Corenflos had 13 points and Cade Lindsey nine for West Vigo. Each of them grabbed three rebounds, as did Stonebarger, but that was enough to share team leadership. The Vikings were outrebounded 38-25 and committed 17 of their 19 turnovers in the first three quarters, which enabled several of the junior varsity Vikings -- who picked up a 42-40 win in the preliminary game on Tyler Wilson’s 3-pointer with three seconds left -- to get some varsity time.

“All we can do is hope to learn from it and get a little bit better,” Boehler concluded.
