WEST TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo snapped a three-game losing streak in high school boys basketball Saturday night, defeating North Central 60-56 in the Jim Mann Green Dome.

The Vikings led most of the way, then hit free throws in the final minute to secure the victory after the Thunderbirds had knotted the score at 54-54.

West Vigo had a 13-11 lead after one stop, led 26-24 at the intermission after the teams had traded leads in the second period and took a 41-35 lead into the final period. The Vikings had a 48-40 lead with about four minutes to play and were up 50-43, but the T-Birds scored seven straight points.

Loren Drake converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 54-52 and Austin Jewell got a bucket off the theft of the inbounds pass for the tie with 41 seconds to play.

Hayden Corenflos hit two free throws seconds later to put the Vikings back in the lead and Tyler Kernstein hit two more from the line for a 58-54 lead. Drake hit two free throws and Corenflos hit a bucket to close out the scoring.

Gavin Stanifer led the 5-11 T-Birds with a game-high 23 points, making 8 of 12 field goals — 6 of 10 from trey range. Andrew Nikirk was the other NC player in double figures with 12 and he had a team-high six boards.

Corenflos led the 6-13 Vikings with 18 points, scoring 10 in the fourth quarter on 4-of-4 shooting from the field in the period and 7 of 11 for the game. Kernstein hit 6 of 8 shots and had 16 points while Austin Sappingfield had 11 points.

Corenflos had nine rebounds, Sappingfield eight and Kernstein help the Vikes finish with a 34-24 edge on the boards.

West Vigo coach Joe Boehler thought execution was a key to his team’s success.

“I thought we did a pretty decent job of taking care of the basketball . . .and we did a nice job of rebounding. I thought Corenflos, Sappingfield and Kernstein did a great job of controlling the boards. Down the stretch, we had some guys step up and hit free throws.  I thought that was huge,” said the coach.

“It’s kind of a frustrating loss. We didn’t play to our ability. Defensively, I don’t know if we were tired from playing Wednesday, Friday and tonight. We didn’t shoot the ball that great. … Gavin hit several 3s.  Defensively, we had too many breakdowns,” said North Central coach Ryan Kamman of the game — the third of the week for his team.

Both teams close out the regular season with road games. West Vigo is at Linton for a rematch — the teams met in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic. “They got us pretty good. We’ll use that as a test to see how much we have improved,” said Boehler.

North Central is at North Knox and Turkey Run. “Two good tests for us heading into the sectional,” said Kamman.
