----- — Boys high school golf teams from the Wabash Valley will compete in the Washington Regional today, seeking a spot in the state finals to be played next week.
Three teams and five individuals not on those teams will earn a spot in the finals.
The field for this regional to be played at Country Oaks is new. Gone are such teams as Jasper and Southridge; in the field are such teams as Avon, Brownsburg and Park Tudor, all ranked this season.
Valley teams are Terre Haute North and South, Sullivan and Greencastle. Indivduals are Koye Kaiser, Cole Bradbury and Clayton French of Linton, Andrew Weisheit of Rockville and Will Martin of North Vermillion.
French and Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan qualified as individuals in last year’s regional. Jasper was the team champ.
Evansville Memorial has been a top-ranked team all season and will be one of the favorites.
North and South each shot 304 to tie for first place in the Linton Sectional and North took the trophy with its fifth score. Sullivan shot 307 to gain the third qualifying spot.
North was one of the teams in the regional a year ago and has all but one player back from that team. Junior Adam LaGrange led the Patriots in the sectional with 73.
South has been in the regional all but twice in Chris Cassell’s tenure as coach. Luke Peoples shot 69 to lead the Braves in the sectional.
Pirtle was medalist in the sectional with 68 for Sullivan with an all-underclassmen field. The Arrows, coached by Doug Boyd, are in the regional for the first time since 2006.
