PREP ROUNDUP: Northview softball goes 4-0 to win Jasper Invitational

JASPER — Northview’s high school softball team went 4-0 and won the Jasper Invitational on Saturday.

The Knights — who are 8-4 overall — clinched the championship by beating Vincennes Lincoln 3-0 and Castle 11-1.

Northview ace Taylor Carter had 21 strikeouts in the pair of games and issued just one walk. She was also a combined 5 of 7 at the plate.

Whitney Halfhill was 5 of 9 with 3 RBI in the two contests.

• Marshall 24, Flora 1 — At Flora, Ill., Macy Shaffner pitched a two-hitter and was one of six Lions with four hits in the Little Illini Conference game.

Cheyenne Thompson was 4 for 5 with a grand slam; Tristan Rowe, Madison Shaffner and Amanda Evinger were all 4 for 5; and Macy Shaffner and Courtney Wallace were both 4 for 6 for the Lions, 6-6 overall and 3-1 in league play.

• Charleston 10, Marshall 6 — At Charleston, Ill., Cheyenne Thompson was 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer, Macy Shaffer was 2 for 4 and scored twice and Tristan Rowe was 2 for 4 for the Lions on Friday.

Baseball

• Northview 11, Hobart 4 — At Brazil, Northview freshman Nathan Thomas pitched six strong innings and the host Knights outslugged Hobart.

Thomas struck out seven, hit a batter and scattered eight Hobart hits before reaching the pitch-count limit set by coach Scott McDonald.

Northview supported Thomas with eight hits against Hobart’s highly touted Brandon Murray, who has signed with reigning NCAA champion South Carolina. Murray was 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Connor Pierce led Northview’s attack with three hits and three runs batted in. Bo Stewart and Connor Ganly each went 2 for 3 with a double.

Highlights — For Northview, Nathan Thomas struck out 7 and gave up 8 hits to earn his first varsity victory. Connor Pierce was 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Northview and Connor Ganly and Bo Stewart each had a double and single. For Hobart, Nick Bokun had 3 hits, including a home run. and Brandon Murray had 2 doubles.

Next — Northview (6-4) travels to Sullivan on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game. Hobart is now 7-5.

Tyler Rapp’s three-run double was the big blow in the opener, while John Brown had four RBIs for the day.
