TERRE HAUTE —
Girls high school golf teams will continue postseason action today with play at regionals around the state.
Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and Northview, plus four individuals from the Wabash Valley, will vie for honors in the Roncalli Regional at Smock Golf Course in the Indianapolis area.
Three players and five individuals will earn spots in the state finals to be played next week.
It is a new route to the state for most teams in the state. Qualifiers from the Northview Sectional in recent years had played in the Martinsville Sectional at Foxcliff with 12 teams instead of 18 in the field.
Five teams ranked in the Top 20 are in the Roncalli Regional including four that made it to the state last year when Roncalli finished third, Center Grove seventh, Carmel tied for eighth and Zionsville was among those not making the first-day cut. This year, all teams in the finals will play both days with fewer teams reaching the finals.
At last year’s regional, Morgan Patterson of South qualified for the state while North tied for third scorewise and placed fourth on fifth score.
Center Grove, Carmel and Ben Davis are other Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference members in today’s field. Carmel won the MIC tournament and Center Grove was second.
“We don’t worry about the opponents. We concentrate on our game and play the course,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.
South had a chance to play at Smock during the season, competing in the Franklin Central Invitional.
Stuckey says it is longer than courses played on most of the season.
“I like it better than Foxcliff. The length is about the same and hazards run through the course,” she noted. “We’ll have to play to play our best.”
Alexandra Pickens and Katelynn Gordon are the two South players who have competed in the regional. Pickens was medalist in the sectional last week and earned all-MIC honors.
Talking about the course and the regional, she said, “It is wider and has more water. The competition will be tough. If we play our best, I really think we have a chance to qualify.”
“My iron and driving are a lot better. I finally found a sweet spot in the irons. My father worked with me a lot during the summer,” says Pickens.
Anna Potter and Nicole Anderson are North’s regional veterans, while Megan Heaton, Sierra Girton, Keirsten Mikesell and Karlie Atkinson all played for Northview in 2011.
