TERRE HAUTE — Apparently, Mother Nature isn’t a high school football fan.

For the second time in three weeks, thunderstorms and lightning delayed Friday night football. For the second time in three weeks, Terre Haute South had a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference game delayed.

A lightning delay postponed the game at the 3:30 mark of the second quarter. Ben Davis led 10-6 at the time the game players were asked to leave the field. The game will be resumed at 10 a.m. today.

Until the rain came, South was competitive with the undefeated Giants.

Both teams punted on their first drives. The Giants struck first blood on their second drive. Running back Malcolm Fogle scored a touchdown off left tackle from 3 yards out to make it 7-0 in the last minute of the opening quarter.

Fogle scored on a quick snap. Some of South’s coaching staff was convinced that Ben Davis tight end Justin Brandon trapped the ball on an 8-yard catch that got Ben Davis inside the South 10.

South quarterback Danny Etling completed a 42-yard pass near the death of the first quarter, but was hit on a blitz on the first play of the second quarter, aggravating his ankle injury.

Etling was treated on the sideline and later returned to action. In the interim, Ben Davis pushed its advantage to 10-0 thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Bryce Phelps.

Etling threw an interception upon his return to action, but it was negated when South’s Jonathan Weakley intercepted a pass by Ben Davis quarterback Kyle Castner at the South 10-yard line.

Weakley returned it 65 yards to give the Braves the ball in Ben Davis territory.

South cashed in. Ben Davis had initially forced a field goal attempt made by South kicker Adam Kahn from 37 yards. But Kahn was roughed on the kick and it gave South a first down and new life.

Etling and Tyler Seibert took advantage immediately. Etling found Seibert on a fade route on the right side for a 13-yard touchdown. The extra point was missed and South trailed 10-6.

Only four more plays were run from scrimmage before the delay was called. Ben Davis had the ball at the South 49 when play stopped.

It was a penalty-marred game. The teams combined for 73 yards of penalties.

Etling completed 5 of 11 passes for 73 yards and the touchdown. Seibert had two receptions for 55 yards.
