TERRE HAUTE — Ben Davis was a winner in girls high school basketball Tuesday, defeating Terre Haute South 47-32 in the Braves’ gym.

The Giants won their first Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference game in three starts, while the Braves dropped to 0-3 in the league.

The teams were tied 10-10 after one period but Ben Davis outscored the host team 24-8 in the second and third periods to take control of the contest.

In the second quarter, South had more turnovers (eight) than shots (six) and had 14 turnovers for the first half compared to nine for the Giants. Both teams shot about 25 percent but Ben Davis had more shots (32-17) and hit eight of them compared to four for South.

The biggest factor was rebounding with Ben Davis having an edge in offensive boards. The Giants outrebounded the Braves 47-35 for the game.

“Before the game, I told the players rebounding would be the difference. Ben Davis had more posssessions because of the rebounding and our turnovers,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.

“Missed layups, turnovers and rebounding. Until we change those figures, we won't win many games,” she added.

The Braves will be on the road for their final game of 2012, facing North Vermillion, which received votes in the Class A poll and has lost only to Riverton Parke.

“It will be a tough game,” said Stuckey.

Junior Danielle Cutino led the Giants, now 4-6, with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three steals while Amber Jones had 13 points and five boards.

Tasia Brewer had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals for South, now 7-5. Lindley Higham hit both of her shots and had five points.

Ben Davis was 18 of 58 from the field for 31 percent and South shot 24 percent, making 9 of 38 — two of them 3-pointers.
