TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North’s one-two punt of Mandee Eberlee and Anna Taylor were more than a young Riverton Parke volleyball team could handle Wednesday night at North High School.
Eberlee hammered 20 kills, served five aces and came up with six digs while Taylor passed out 35 assists and came up with eight digs in the Patriots’ 3-0 victory over the Panthers.
“Eberle is the backbone of [North’s] team. She does front row, back row and the other thing is her jump serve has good top spin. So she’s got the complete game. Plus, she can play back row passer too,” Riverton Parke coach John Memmer said.
But what happens when Eberlee gets help? Taylor also got the ball to Lindsey Klingele for nine kills and Brianna Burgess for six kills.
That was the part North coach Kris Painter liked about the Patriots’ fifth victory of the season.
“That’s one thing we’ve been working on. Mandee is going to get her kills and we’ve had discussions about we need other people to step up and have theirs, as well, for us to be an overall effective team. Teams are going to find a way to stop Mandee so we got to have somebody who is going to pick that up,” Painter said.
Overall, Painter didn’t think the Patriots played an exceptional match.
“I thought we had some bright spots. [Eberle] was on fire tonight, he said.
“I thought [Brianna] Burgess had a lot of nice swings too. We had good serving at times and then we fell apart at times. I couldn’t consider it overall a good performance, but I would consider in stages we had a good performance,” Painter said.
Riverton Parke (3-3) was led by Shelby Benell with five kills and one block and Rachel Austin who had five blocks and two kills.
“We’re young and inexperienced. There were some aspects of tonight’s match that I was pleased with. I felt we could have done a little bit better in serve receive passing,” Memmer said.
Riverton Parke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one with Austin getting a block at the net. North battled back and tied the score 5-5 when Taylor and Eberle teamed up on a block.
With Riverton Parke only one point behind, 13-12, North closed out the match with a 12-2 run. Eberlee had nine kills in the first game and Taylor closed the game with back-to-back aces.
Game two was briefly tied 6-6, but Eberle and Klingele combined for eight kills and North pulled away for a 25-13 lead.
Riverton Parke, in a rebuilding season after winning back-to-back sectional titles, didn’t have an answer for North’s growing net game. Eberle had seven kills and served two aces in the third game.
North returns to action at home Thursday night against Edgewood.
