WEST TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo opened the high school volleyball season Tuesday night on a positive note, sweeping visiting South Putnam 3-0 at the Jim Mann Green Dome to give first-year coach Crystal Baker her first win.

“It’s always good to start with a win,” Baker said.

West Vigo pulled away for easy wins 25-15, 25-13 in the first two games, then fought off South Putnam 25-22 in the third game.

“We were a little sloppy at times, just getting used to each other, used to getting back in the [Jim Mann] Green Dome … and playing in front of a crowd always changes how you play. There were nerves, a little bit, but they started to adjust to each other, started to execute on plays better as the match went on,” said Baker of the Vikings.

Sophomores Kylie Cardinal and Lizzie Barton led the Vikings. Cardinal had 26 assists and served two aces, while Barton put down nine kills and made two blocks at the net.

“Lizzie [Barton] and Kylie [Cardinal] are two of our sophomore up and coming players. They connect really well,” Baker said.

South Putnam’s kills were spread out as Emily Dobson and Kenzie Trisler each had four. Setter Emily Clark passed out 23 assists and Katie McHugh 18.

Baker saw things the Vikings will work on before Thursday’s match at South Knox.

“Service reception and serves. We missed quite a few serves. My tally is we missed 12 over the course of the match. I think I can chalk that up to nerves and playing back in the arena, first home match. I don’t think that will be a problem for us [in the future],” Baker said.

West Vigo scored the first three points in game one and never trailed.

Barton finished off the 25-15 win with a kill down the line.

The Vikings jumped out to a 5-2 lead in game and went ahead 9-3. Nikki Wilson’s second kill of the game put the Vikings up 20-12. Jordynn Scott served an ace to finish off the win.

In game three, South Putnam dug in and took an early 7-4 lead. The Eagles threw themselves at every ball to stay alive. An ace by South Putnam’s Katie McHugh tied the score 18-18.

The Vikings took the lead for good on two errors by the Eagles. Kills by West Vigo’s Barton and Shyanne Elkins closed the match.
