Few goals scored in high school soccer jamboree

TERRE HAUTE — Even longtime rivalries couldn’t provoke much scoring Saturday as high school soccer jamborees were played at Terre Haute South.

Three of the eight periods involving the three Vigo County schools plus Northview went scoreless, including both meetings between Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South.

Friendlies? Apparently so, although there was one coach who wished his team had been better tested.

“I was a little disappointed,” said first-year coach Aaron Crawn of the Northview girls team, which outscored both Terre Haute North and West Vigo 2-0 in two periods. The disappointing part? North played its junior varsity girls against the Knights.

“It doesn’t give us a good marking point,” Crawn said, although he’ll get to see all the Patriots when the two teams play Wednesday at Northview.

West Vigo teams yielded scores in all four of their periods, but the Vikings have some building to do with both rosters.

“I saw a lot of improvement,” noted coach Scott McClain of the West Vigo girls team. “I’ll think we’ll be real competitive with schools our size. We have some new talent, and today they were getting experience against some of the tougher schools we’ll face.”

“We’re happy with what we’ve seen,” added coach Culley DeGroote of the Viking boys team. “We’ve got a lot of new faces. Our back side has got to get a lot better.”

“We mixed it up a lot today,” said coach Ron Kiernicki of the Northview boys, who got to play some different positions than they will when the real games begin. “Our philosophy is maintaining possession and being patient, and we’re seeing that.”

Coach John Welch of the North boys — who played two scoreless periods — had a similar response.

“We’re working a lot of possession [soccer],” he said, “and I thought we did a good job. We need work on our forward play, but I thought our passing was really good.”

South’s boys couldn’t convert some scoring opportunities against North.

“We’re a young team, and execution will come with time,” first-year coach Aaron Nicoson said. “I was satisfied with the way we set up the ball and with our passing. We’re trying out different formations, seeing what’s best for us.”

The North-South girls period was also scoreless.

“Always nice to have a clean sheet,” said coach Kyle Baker of North.

“I got to look at a couple of good freshmen,” noted coach Dave Drake of South, “although I can’t see yet where I’m going to get my offense yet. … We’re not in game shape, but we’re working on it.”
