Boys golf season to tee off Saturday at Northview Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — Most Wabash Valley boys high school golf teams will open the season Saturday, competing in the Northview Invitational at Forest Park.

Play will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the course in Brazil.

Players with varsity experience fill the rosters of most teams in the area. Greencastle was the winner of the 2012 Northview tournament, led by sophomores Alec Davis and Luke Brotherton.

Linton has three regulars back from the team that was second and won the Linton Sectional while Terre Haute North has all but one player returning from the third-place team in the Northview event and second-place sectional team.

Most teams in the area will compete in the sectional at Phil Harris Course at Linton again in a revised state golf tournament format. Team and individual qualifiers will vie for regional honors in a regional to be played at Hulman Links.

Checking some of the teams:

Linton — In addition to winning the sectional last year, Linton again was the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference champ with five Miners earning all-conference honors.

Clayton French, Cole Bradbury and Koye Kaiser are back for their senior season; all were in the Miners’ top five. French was an individual qualifier for the state finals.

Coach Derek Bradbury says junior Paul Goodman, sophomore Evan Sipes and freshman Dane Kanen are top contenders to be in the lineup.

Northview — Josh Trout is in his second season of coaching the boys team and likes prospects for the Knights.

“We have some dedicated golfers who want to be successful. I think we have the potential to be a good team,” he says.

Players back with varsity experience are seniors Dylan Nesty and Konnor Cheek and sophomores Keegan Roembke and Seth Payton. Nesty was an individual qualifier for the regional as the Knights took sixth as a team.

Others on the roster are senior Stephen Watts, junior Austin Bowen, sophomores Nick McCollum, Dylan Sutherland and Gabe Rogers and freshmen Sam Grimes, Blake Bennett and Austin Rolloff.

Sullivan — Doug Boyd is the coach and says his team will have a good mix of youth and experience.

“With just one senior on the roster, we are a very young team. Some of the players who got varsity experience last year need to step up for us,” he says.

Seth Conwell is the lone senior for the Arrows. Others who played on the varsity are juniors Luke Willis and Jake Pirtle and sophomores Nathan Pirtle, Jace Moody and Stone Jackson.

Nathan Pirtle qualified for the state finals as a freshman.

Contenders vying for varsity play are junior Jake Foster and freshmen Colton Kuppler, Austin Bobbitt and Riley Pirtle. “I really like our freshman class. We could see as many as eight or nine individuals playing varsity golf,” says Boyd.

Terre Haute North — Abe Nasser Jr. is in his second year of coaching the boys team at North and also is the girls coach.

“We have 10 seniors on the roster. Most of our players played a lot of summer golf to prepare for the season. They like golf,” said the coach.

Adam LaGrange is a junior and claimed the Pepsi Mountain Dew Junior Tour championship. Ryan Baker, a senior, was another top finisher in the state competition.

Top players in five rounds of qualifying for the season opener were LaGrange, Sam Pollock, Baker, Evan Perdiew, Dante Bagnoche and Andrew Behnke.

The Patriots were Vigo County champs and winners of the Terre Haute South Invitational in addition to taking second in the sectional and third in the Northview Invitational.

Coach Nasser likes the new postseason alignment with Hulman Links being one of five regionals in the state.

Terre Haute South — Chris Cassell is coaching the South team for the 10th year and also likes the new alignmnet.

“We hope to make the regional a premier event,” he said.

He said South players have had some good scores in early practices in spite of poor weather. The Braves failed to advance to the regional as a team for only the second time in the coach’s tenure.

He thinks this team can end that one-year slump.

Players with varsty experience are seniors Luke Peoples and Sam Mimms and juniors Mario Foradori, Drew and Ryan Cahill. Freshmen battling for playing time are Gregory Stultz and Braxton McIntyre.

West Vigo — Travis Turpen begins his fifth season as coach of the Vikings. They will open the season Monday against Cloverdale at Rea Park.

Returnees from 2012 are junior Brandon Long and sophomores Nick Leek, Tyler Wilson and Austin Roach.

Newcomers are sophomore David McClain and freshmen Clayton Baugh, Nate Keith and Nathan Ennis.

“I look for Brandon and Nick to have good years and compete for a spot in the regional. They both really love the game and have great attitudes toward golf. Tyler and Austin were in their first year last season and showed rapid improvement,” says Turpen.

“Nate Keith has shown some potential in early practices. He wants to get better. He and McClain, Baugh, and Ennis will compete for the fifth and sixth spots in the lineup,” says the coach.

“It is essential that all of the players work on chipping and putting — keys to shooting low scores,” says Turpen.

  • SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Big Four teams looking to build off strong 2013 seasons

  • SPT 013114 AIMONE FILE.jpg Amey Takes Aim: Columnist’s boys basketball tradition continues

In marked contrast to my recent whiny column about girls basketball, I was blessed this winter to see virtually every high school team in the Wabash Valley during the boys season.
Some might suggest that was a mixed blessing, since a few of our teams weren’t as successful as they are used to being (particularly in the 2014 portion of the season), but the Tribune-Star was still involved with two teams that came within a game of the state finals, one of them in an Indiana final four (no capitalization anymore, new system) and two teams that were in the top eight of their class. That’s only three great teams — Paris was both a game away and in the final eight — but that’s still a pretty good haul.
