PREP/METRO ROUNDUP: Turkey Run rolls to title

ROCKVILLE — Turkey Run routed North Vermillion 15-2 to capture the Class A Rockville Sectional championship for high school baseball Monday night.

No other details were provided before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.

Turkey Run (10-17) will advance to the Lafayette Central Catholic Regional on Saturday.

Earlier Monday, Turkey Run blanked Riverton Parke 11-0 in five innings as Jake Amstutz pitched a one-hit shutout in the second semifinal matchup

In Monday’s first semifinal, North Vermillion shut out Rockville 7-0. Dalton McCool struck out 16 Rox batters to pick up the victory.

Highlights — For Turkey Run, winning pitcher Jake Amstutz allowed only 1 hit and struck out 10 Riverton Parke batters over 5 innings and contributed a double on offense; Jeff Woods went 2 for 3 with a home run, a triple, 3 RBIs and 3 runs; Jeff Girdler went 2 for 4 with a triple, 2 RBIs and 2 runs; Schuyler Jeffers contributed a triple and 2 runs; and Tyler Goddard had a double.



In other high school baseball:

• Shakamak, Union advance — In the Class A Shakamak Sectional, Shakamak routed Union 17-0 in the championship game late Monday night.

In sectional semifinal contests earlier Monday, the host Lakers defeated Clay City 4-1 and Union downed White River Valley 6-2.

Details of the sectional championship game were not available before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.



Golf

• Results in — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, the duo of Jim Winning and Don Decker fired a 57 to win the 2012 Memorial Day Tournament on Monday.

The tournament used a “best 18 out of 36 holes” format.

• Stanbrough prevails — At Haubstadt, Jon Stanbrough won the Memorial Weekend Classic for sprint cars Sunday at Tri-State Speedway.

Stanbrough led the final eight turns to win the feature sanctioned by KISS and Midwest Sprint Car Series. Seth Parker led the first 22 laps and finished fourth behind Damion Gardner and Kyle Cummins.

Veteran driver Ken Schrader won his heat and feature for modifieds.

The Hut Hundred for U.S. Auto Club midget cars is slated Saturday.
