BRAZIL — Terre Haute North took Northview Sectional honors in girls high school golf Saturday in windy, sunny conditions at Forest Park.

The Patriots shot 366 to edge the host team which shot 368 and Terre Haute South took third with 381. All three teams will vie for honors in the regional at Smock Golf Club next Saturday.

South Vermillion carded 399 to finish fourth and Cloverdale had 403 to round out the top five in the eight-team tournament.

All of the top finishers and other teams had season-best 18-hole scores in spite of early winds and Friday’s rain which made for a wet course at the start with little roll.

Northview junior Keirsten Mikesell went 40-44 for 84 to take medalist honors. North fresman Megan Ramer was second with 87 and South Vermillion sophomore Tori Vitaniemi was third low with 88.

Vitaniemi is one of the individual qualifiers for the regional. Others are SV teammate Ali Bazzani who shot 94 and Cloverdale sophomore Harlee Fuetter who had 90.

Fuetter, Ali Danielson of South, Karlie Atkinson of Northview and Carson Smith of North all had 90 for fourth-best score.

“I got off to a rough start on the back nine but started to play better on the front and started making my putts and had one birdie,” said Mikesell, who also was medalist in the Western Indiana Conference tournament at Idle Creek.

Ramer and Danielson were the leaders after the first nine holes, each shooting 43 on the back. “I did not hit the ball very well . . . I adjusted to the wind,” said Ramer who was fourth low in the Conference Indiana action this week.

Vitaniemi was being congratulated by teammates, her coach and her parents after being one of the last players to finish. She shot 105 in the sectional a year and improved by 17 shots.

“I putted well … I am excited to be going to the regional,” said the sophomore.

North won its third sectional under Abe Nasser Jr. in his seven years as the coach. Ramer has been the top scorer for the Patriots all year.

Carson Smith had 90, Alex Bryant 92 and Alli Farrington 97 to round out the team scoring. Farrington is the lone senior in the lineup.

“Just like the boys in the spring [when North went to the state],  it was potentially there all season. This week, we talked and did everything to prepare and everybody did what they had to do. It was a team effort.

“Carson, Alex and Alli did what they had to do. Megan did not have her best day … second is never bad. She did what she had to do for her team,” said Nasser.

Northview lost just once during the season in nine-hole matches and won some tournaments for a standout season with two seniors in the lineup.

Atkinson had here 90 and Jensen Swaim and Makenzie Mager each shot 97 for the Knights’ scoring.

“We had an outstanding year. Today we came up a little short but coming in we knew three teams would battle right down to the wire. Congratulations to Abe and his players. We’re not dissatisfied at all and gave it everything we had,” said Northview coach Bob Treash.

• Greyhounds win — Carmel won the Ben Davis Sectional played at South Grove on Friday, shooting 298.

Ben Davis was second with 339 and Guerin Catholic took third to qualify for regional action.
