Terre Haute North's defense too tough for South in girls basketball

Patriots win THSB Tip-Off Classic title

TERRE HAUTE — After a championship game characterized by just about anything but offense, it was appropriate that Nicole Anderson’s Most Valuable Player award at the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tip-Off Tournament was announced after one of her best defensive efforts.

Anderson was respectable enough on offense Saturday night at West Vigo, leading Terre Haute North to the championship with a 49-33 win over Terre Haute South. She had 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals, two assists and two blocked shots.

But she also guarded South’s Tasia Brewer — in a matchup of former middle school teammates — at the other end of the court. By halftime Brewer had not only not scored, she hadn’t attempted a shot.

With Layne Curley also notable on defense — three steals and four blocked shots in addition to 15 points and five assists — the Patriots held South to 21-percent shooting in a final game that was both closer than the final score and not as close.

The Braves didn’t score in the second quarter, and had gone more than 12 minutes without a point until Lindley Higham got a putback with 4:17 left in the third quarter.

Despite how North was controlling the game, however, South was still within 27-14 at that point, and was about to get closer. It was 29-21 by the end of the third quarter, 30-25 after a Kelli Buchanan 3-pointer early in the fourth period and 31-27 when an Anderson blocked shot went to Lauren Hambrock for a rebound basket.

Instead of maintaining that momentum, however, the Braves had shot their last bullet. North got the game’s next 13 points — five by Curley, four by Anderson and two each by Adrienne Pritchard and Abby Middleton — and the game was suddenly out of reach.

South’s chances for a fourth-quarter comeback were also thwarted by North’s rebound dominance. In a game with so many missed shots — North only shot 26 percent in winning — there were plenty of rebounds to be had, and Pritchard had eight in the fourth quarter alone, 21 for the game, while also scoring 11 points. Also effective on the boards for North were Sierra Sykes and Middleton with nine rebounds each.

South’s scoring leader was tiny point guard Labrea Joyner with nine points. In a stat that the Braves might not appreciate, she also shared team rebound honors with the 6-foot-4 Higham with seven each. South also had some defensive stalwarts, particularly Kylie Fendrick and Emily Bell.

In the six games leading up to the championship contest Saturday, the theme was probably improvement. Best story of the early part of the day was either North Central — which got its first victory since the 2010-2011 season before being plagued by fouls in the fifth-place game against Greencastle — or Northview, which has now doubled its win total from last season after overtaking Owen Valley to take the third-place game.

Aubrey Evans had 18 points in the North Central win, with South Vermillion’s Bailey Mack getting 14; Callan Taylor had 16 points and Jessica Lenihan 10 in Greencastle’s win over West Vigo, which got 13 from Lexus Elkins; Anderson had 20 points and Curley 13 in North’s win over Owen Valley, which got 13 from Alicia Wilson and 10 from Shelden Williams; and Brewer had 17 in South’s win over Northview.

Taylor had 16 more points, Lenihan 11 and Raleigh Amis grabbed 10 rebounds for Greencastle in the fifth-place game, Taylor Netherlain scoring 12 for North Central. Mikayla Rowan had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ashley Hughes six points, seven rebounds and nine assists in Northview’s win over Owen Valley, with Wilson scoring 10 for the Patriots.

  • SPT 062814 DANE RUPSKA.jpg Gold surprises Black 35-12 in WVFCA All-Star Game

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
