Vincennes Lincoln gets first baseball win of season at Terre Haute South

TERRE HAUTE — Runs and hits were scarce in high school baseball action Wednesday at Terre Haute South.

Vincennes Lincoln made the most of three hits to defeat the host Braves 2-1 in eight innings to win its first game.

The Alices scored one run without a hit in the fifth inning; the Braves tied it with an unearned run in the seventh and the Alices won it with an unearned run in the eighth.

Pete Lanoo struck out the Alices’ leadoff hitter to open the eighth but Brandt Nowaskie reached on an error, took second when Garrett Smith was hit by a pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Bailey Montgomery.

Lanoo got Levi Archer to ground out to end the inning and winning pitcher Zane Bechman retired South in order to get the victory.

Archer was hit by a Damon Olds’ pitch to start the Vincennes fifth and Olds walked the next two batters to load the bases.

Archer was out attempting to score but Joe Bobe scored on a groundout to give the Alices their 1-0 lead.

Bechman walked Jared Wolfe to begin the South seventh and he took third on Bechman’s throwing error while Justin Jenkins reached on his second hit of the contest.

Wolfe scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Zach Donnelly. Jacob Johnson and Preston Tofaute both were intentionally walked to load the bases.

Jenkins was out at second as Cody Brock reached on a fielder’s choice and Lanoo flied out to center to end the inning.

Jenkins and Slover each had two hits for the Braves, now 2-3, with Slover having a double — the only extra-base hit of the contest.

Freshman Logan Ames started for South and gave up two hits in four innings, striking out two and hitting the leadoff hitter.

“It’s early in the year and we’ve had the same problem in our three losses. Our seniors just aren’t stepping up. We had runners at third in the sixth and seventh innings and didn’t score any runs,” said coach Kyle Kraemer.

“You’re only as good as your seniors. They’re not hitting the ball … Logan Ames, a freshman, threw 31 pitches in four innings and was around the plate,” he added.
