Post 346 wins national regional opener over Midland, Mich.

TERRE HAUTE — Wayne Newton Post 346 put eight hits together with 12 bases on balls to open play in the Great Lakes National Regional with a 10-4 victory over Midland, Mich., that ended early Friday morning at Bob Warn Field.

Post 346 (37-12) plays Edwardsville (33-6) in the second game tonight.

Wayne Newton winning pitcher Damon Olds went 7 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, four earned runs, struck out six and walked six. Pete Lannoo came on in the eighth and finished the game.

Cody Brock led the Wayne Newton attack with three hits, including a double. Craig Peters was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Cody Thornton officially appeared at the plate only one time, but with three base on balls and one hit by pitch tallied three RBIs.

Midland (44-6), which will play Ash Port, Wis., immediately after the 10 a.m. game today, was led by Steel O’Boyle with two hits.

Wayne Newton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with hits by Peters, Lannoo and Brock. Peters singled to lead off the frame, moved to second on Zach Milam’s sacrifice bunt and dove head-first across home plate on Lannoo’s single to left field.

Lannoo moved to second on the play at the plate and came home with the second run on Brock’s base hit into the right-center gap.

Midland came right back to take a 4-2 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth on two walks, an error and three hits. O’Boyle, Robert Ellebracht and Michael Wright each had a base hit and Tanner Gross scored a run on a deep sacrifice fly.

Terre Haute took command of the game with a seven-run seventh inning.

Post 346 sent 13 batters to the plate while taking a 9-4 lead. After consecutive hits by Lannoo, Brock and Sam Wolf, Post 346 received three straight walks from Midland pitching to score three runs. Jacob Johnson brought home Thornton with a sacrifice fly and Peters drove in two more runs with a single. Peters scored when Wolf, batting for the second time in the inning, walked.
