Monday was the first day for high school girls golf matches to be played and 10 teams got the season started in the Plainfield Invitational at Deer Creek Golf Club.
Zionsville shot 326 to take team honors followed by Greenwood, Ben Davis, Franklin, Plainfield, Perry Meridian, Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, Cascade and Westfield.
Jessica Smyth of Cascade took medalist honors with a 5-over-par 76 score. Kylie Day of Zionsville was second low with 78 — the only other score in the 70s.
Zionsville is ranked sixth in the first poll of the season and counted scores ranging from Day’s 78 to 84 to win by 45 shots.
Veteran players were missing from the lineups of both Terre Haute teams.
Katelyn Gordon did not play for South due to a previous non-athletic commitment.
Anna Potter was sidelined with a back injury for North. Kelli Carney also began the match for the Patriots but had to withdraw due to the heat.
Alexandra Pickens was the only senior in the South lineup and the only player on the roster who was on the 2011 sectional team. She shot 86 to pace the Braves.
Freshman Ali Danielson has just started to play golf and had 95, second for the Braves.
“With a young team and playing a course we had not seen before, breaking 400 was good. This match will be a measuring stick. We will see what we have to do to get better,” said coach Cara Stuckey.
North began a busy week with the match. The Patriots will be in the Hamilton Southeastern Invitational today, compete in the Gibson Southern Southern Invitational, then play host to 12 teams in the North Invitational on Saturday at Hulman Links.
“With Anna out, we had some first-timers out there to see what they could do. We’ll see where we go from here,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.
