TERRE HAUTE — Vincennes Rivet topped the leaderboard in high school girls golf action Tuesday at Rea Park.

The Patriots were team winners in the South Braves Invitational and junior Carly Waggoner was medalist.

Rivet shot 338 to win with Jasper second with 365, followed by Northview 370, Terre Haute North 378 and Terre Haute South 386 to round out the top five in the nine-team event played in cloudy, overcast conditions.

Waggoner carded a 2-over-par 75 to take medalist honors, going 40-35 with four birdies in her round. “I started off rough … then had a lot of birdies,” said Waggoner.

She said her best 18-hole score in a match was 70 last year.

Annie Getzin of Jasper was second low medalist with 80 and Megan Ramer of Terre Haute North and Payton Meeks of Rivet each shot 82 for the third-best score. Northview’s Keirsten Mikesell shot 83 to take fourth.

The Rivet girls golf program started started three years ago and took second in this tournament last season. “We have four juniors and one freshman in our lineup,” said coach Charlie Waggoner.

The Patriots will be the host team for their own invitational on Thursday.

Getzin and Harman are the two players back from the Jasper team that won the tournament last year and went to the state. Steve Milligan is the veteran coach of the Wildcats.

Coach Bob Treash was “tickled to death” with the Northview score and place. “We have a young team with three new players,” he said.

The Knights will compete in the Edgewood Invitational at Bloomington on Thursday.

North and South both were competing in their second tournament of the week and the Braves will be in the Trojan Classic at The Legends of Indiana Course on Saturday.

Ramer is a freshman for North and her 82 followed up an 81 that was good for fifth in the Plainfield Invitational on Monday.

The Patriots will not have another match until Aug. 22 when they face Northview. Coach Abe Nasser Jr. said his team will work on fundamentals, the short game and making better swings in practice.

“We were better today,” he said.

Sophomore  Ali Danielson again paced South with an 86.

South coach Cara Stuckey was pleased with the improvement in the team’s scores. “We have work to do, saving shots around the greens,” she said.

Kristi Thomas also had an 86 for South Vermillion. The Wildcats will be in the Attica Invitational at Harrison Hills today.
