Edington's walkoff HR sends West Vigo softball to semistate title game

Vikings will play Gibson Southern

NASHVILLE, Ind. — The narrative entering the Class 3A Brown County softball semistate was that there were three teams in the top five poll in the field ... and West Vigo.

Despite all of that, after two semistate games on Saturday, the Vikings are still walking tall. Or walking off tall as the case was in West Vigo's semistate opener against unbeaten Lebanon.

Shelby Edington sent West Vigo to the stratosphere with a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh as the unheralded Vikings beat the Tigers in dramatic fashion in a 2-1 victory.

Edington ecstatically twirled her right arm around as she rounded the bases. It was one of the most dramatic moments in West Vigo's athletic history.

"I have no words to describe it. I fell down at the plate I was so overwhelmed. It was awesome," Edington said.

West Vigo (24-9) will play Gibson Southern in the 7 p.m. championship game. Once-beaten Gibson Southern defeated South Dearborn 4-1 in the morning game.

Lebanon led 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh in a game characterized by stout defense and pitching by both sides.

Leah Morrison, West Vigo's pitcher, led off the seventh with a double into the right field gap. Up next was Edington, the Vikings' cleanup hitter, who had been 0-for-2 to that point in the contest.

On the second pitch she saw, Edington crushed a Jessica Weaver offering to left field. Right off the bat, there was little doubt it was going to go out.

"I was expecting her to pitch me outside the whole time. My first two at-bats were both outside. But this time she threw it right down the plate. I just took it and went with the pitch," Edington said.

Standing on second base, Morrison was just hoping for a base hit to try and score the tying run.

"It was amazing. I knew she could do it. She's one of the best hitters on our team and I knew she would come through. I'm so happy I got that hit so she could win the game," Morrison said.

The ball landed underneath Brown County's left field scoreboard and set off a rapturous celebration from a large contingent of West Vigo fans on-hand.

"It was unbelievable. It was so dramatic. It was a perfect way to end that game," West Vigo coach Cherish Easton said.

What put West Vigo in position to win the game in such memorable fashion was the pitching of Morrison and its infield defense.

Morrison kept the Tigers (26-1) off-balance with changing speeds and spin. After giving up two hits in the first and a solo home run by her counterpart Weaver in the second, Morrison settled in. Lebanon managed just three base hits the rest of the way and never advanced past second base.

"I knew I had to keep my spin and grip on the ball. They hit a lot of home runs. The one home run they hit hurt, but we came back," Morrison said.

West Vigo's infield defense helped. Lebanon hit into two double plays, the first a bizarre play kicked off by a diving infield catch by Edington in the first.

Lebanon had runners on first and second and both ran, thinking Edington had trapped the ball. Edington threw to second to double up the lead runner, but Lebanon's trailing runner batted the ball away. The umpires didn't immediately catch the interference, but West Vigo doubled up the lead runner anyway.

"We made some double plays this game and our defense had Leah's back," Easton said.

West Vigo had just three hits off of Weaver entering the seventh inning, but the Vikings have proven to be a resilient team and the Vikings stayed calm.

"We've talked all year about what it takes to be a champion. I told them that no matter what, you have to remain humble. After every game, we've done that. We've practiced it, now we have to put it into play and they're doing that," Easton said.

Easton said Morrison would be the first option to pitch against 18-1 Gibson Southern. If Morrison can't pitch, Hannah Harden would be on the mound in the championship game.

West Vigo has never advanced to a state tournament or championship game in a girls sport.

Maybe they should play this at Valle Field. It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
