TERRE HAUTE — Mooresville outscored Terre Haute South 26-16 in the fourth period Saturday night to rally for a 64-60 victory in the Pioneers’ season opener.

Junior Jacob Johnson had Mooresville’s first 17 points in the last period and finished with 21 of his 32 points in the quarter, including eight of his 14 free throws.

He was 7 of 14 from the field — firing in 4 of 5 treys — and was good on 14 of 20 from the free throw line.

South senior Jeremy Turner matched Johnson’s total with 32. He was good on 10 of 17 from the field and hit 7 of 10 free tosses. Turner also had 32 in the season opener and had a game-high nine boards and three steals on Saturday.

Kevaris Gregory had 10 points and four steals for South and Spencer Tofaute had seven points — all in the final eight minutes — for the winless Braves.

Lane Weaver had nine points for the Pioneers, hitting all four shots he took from the field.

South had one more field goal than the winners and canned 14 of 20 from the foul line; the Pioneers hit 22 of 36 free throws — 9 of 12 in the final frame. Three South players fouled out in the last quarter.

“I thought we got on a pretty good roll in the second and third quarter, then we couldn’t get any momentum in the last quarter with Mooresville getting to the line,” said South coach Scott Ridge.

“Turner and Spence played their hearts out and sophomores came in and gave us a lift. We were getting good shots and hitting them and got a lead,” he added.

South was 13 of 25 from the field in the second and third stanzas with seven 3-pointers as the Braves went from trailing 7-6 to taking a 44-38 lead into the final frame.

The Braves go for their first victory on Friday in another home game against Center Grove.

South was a 48-43 winner in the junior varsity game to hike its record to 3-0.
