PREP ROUNDUP: Shakamak girls fall in regional title game

SHELBYVILLE — The Shakamak girls basketball team finished the season with a flourish, reaching the championship game of the Class A Southwestern (Shelbyville) Regional.

But the Lakers lost 60-42 to the host Southwestern (Shelbyville) Spartans on Saturday night.

Kelsey Pilant, who also scored 19 during the Lakers’ 48-30 afternoon win over Indianapolis Tindley, paced Shakamak with 19 points.

Shakamak finished its season 12-12.

In other girls high school basketball Saturday:

• Falcons win one, lose one — At Sharpsville, North Vermillion defeated Southern 34-25 in the semifinals of the Class A Tri-Central Regional.

Then the Falcons lost to Lafayette Central Catholic by a 46-34 score in the regional championship game late Saturday night, but additional details were unavailable before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.

North Vermillion, coached by Terry Naylor and ranked No. 7 in the latest Class A state poll, finished with a 24-3 record. Lafayette Central Catholic is now 17-9.

Wrestling

• Knight loses to defending champ — At Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Northview senior Jesse Miller concluded his high school career in the state finals late Friday night when he lost via pin to defending state champion Mitch Sliga of Fishers in the 195-pound weight class.

The pin took place with one second left in the first period. Miller finished this season with a 37-11 record.

“Sliga is the real deal,” Northview coach Dan Mikesell said Saturday. “He dominated the field this weekend. I feel like [Miller] could have placed if we’d gotten a different draw.

“I’m very proud of Jesse getting this far. He capped off a great senior season with a losing trip to the big dance.”

Sliga, a senior, took a 46-0 mark into Saturday’s quarterfinal round. He ended up winning the state title again late Saturday night.

Boys basketball

• South Vermillion 73, Riverton Parke 55 — In the old Clinton High School gym, Jordan Branz had 18 points and Kaden Lawson 12 to lead South Vermillion to a rivalry win Friday night.

Matthew Haltom led the Panthers with 17 points.
