FARMERSBURG — For three-plus quarters West Vigo and host North Central went back and forth. The Thunderbirds would take a three-point lead, then the Vikings would spurt back to a four-point edge.

But over the final 6 minutes and 30 seconds, West Vigo took control on the defensive end of the floor and pulled away to a 60-43 victory. The Vikings are back to .500 at 10-10 on the year.

“The first three quarters I felt like we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We made a lot of unnecessary turnovers, tried to force some things. I thought we missed a lot of shots early in the game. I felt like if we could quit shooting ourselves in the foot then we exert our well on them,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

West Vigo held North Central scoreless for 5 minutes and 14 seconds while extending a 41-39 edge to 56-39.

“When we dial in and really focus on what we’re doing we’re pretty good defensively,” Boehler said.

Kyle Stewart again led West Vigo with 18 points, followed by Braiden Cardinal with 11 points off  the bench, including nine in the fourth quarter.

“[Cardinal] is one of those guys who has had some really good practices in the last couple of weeks. Early in the year we had been playing him mainly on the JV team and he was very productive for the JV team and we felt like he deserved an opportunity when we were struggling [on the varsity]. Today he breathed some new life into us and I’ve felt like he’s done that for us the last two weeks,” Boehler said.

West Vigo also got nine points and 11 rebounds from Adrien Corenflos.

North Central (6-14) was led by Loren Drake with 12 points.

The lead changed hands six times in the opening quarter and West Vigo lead 12-11 going into the second. North Central hit just 4-10 shots from the floor in the second period, but West Vigo hit just 4-13 and commited six turnovers.

Tyler Hayes gave West Vigo a 20-17 edge with 1:58 left in the first half, but North Central’s Tod Lebeda, Loren Drake and Andrew Nikirk combined for seven points and the Thunderbirds led 24-22 at halftime.

West Vigo’s Aaron Kirby and Corenflos started the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Vikings ahead 28-24. But the Thunderbirds tied the score 34-34 with 2:12 left.

West Vigo led 39-36 going into the fourth quarter. Leading 41-39 with 6:30 left in the game, the Vikings went on a 15-0 run to put the contest away.

Stewart ran down a long rebound and took it the length of the court for a lay up that started the Vikings’ run. Lindsey drove to the basket for back to back layups. Cardinal scored the Vikings’ next seven points for a 54-39 lead and Stewart capped the run with two points.

North Central’s Stanifer scored an inside basket to break the Thunderbirds’ scoring drought.
