TERRE HAUTE — Class 4A No. 4 Carmel just refuses to beat itself.

Terre Haute North defended the Greyhounds hard Friday night on Jim Jones Court, but coach Scott Heady’s team made just four turnovers, the Greyhounds’ sixth straight boys basketball game with five or less.

And Carmel (17-2) has shooters, connecting on 18-of-32 from the field in finishing off an unbeaten run through the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference with a 54-40 victory.

“They have an excellent point guard. They’re so efficient, they never take bad shots, they never get out of their role. That’s why they’re the conference champions and defending state champions,” Terre Haute North coach Todd Woelfle said.

Carmel sophomore Ryan Cline hit three 3-pointers during a 5 1/2-minute stretch in the second half to help the Greyhounds stretch a nine-point lead to 14 with six minutes to go. North was unable to break within 10 the remainder of the game, and the Patriots fell to 11-10 overall and 1-5 in the MIC.

Calvin Blank paced the Patriots with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Austin Lewis chipped in with 12 points.

“I was proud of our guys. I thought that we competed and that we were a team tonight. They were very focused in on the scouting report. We defended them well, they just have a really good ballclub,” Woelfle said.

Cline finished 4-of-7 from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points. James Volovic led Carmel with 15, going 2 for 3 on 3-pointers.

North held one of Carmel’s top scorers, Michael Volovic, to just three points, but Carmel coach Scott Heady was happy to see his other veterans step up against a tough Patriots’ squad.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for what they do. They defend, they’re disciplined defensively. They defended our ball screens against us as well as anybody did all year. They were just physically up and tough on the ball,” Heady said. “It’s a team where, if you’re not ready, they’ll get you.

“Our guys, we have a little toughness about us. We had to tough out some possessions.”

Terre Haute North just dug itself too big a hole in the first halfl, following behind 25-10 in the second quarter.

The Patriots got a spark from Blank and backup guard Casey Vickers. Blank hit a 3-pointer and converted on a Nate Jahn assist, while Vickers picked up a steal, a pair of free throws and a layup to cap a 9-0 run for North.

But James Volovic capped the first half with a 3-point play to give him 10 at the break.

North was solid offensively with seven turnovers and 15-of-34 shooting, but the Patriots settled for quick shots a few too many times.

“When you play possession-by-possession basketball like this [Carmel] team does and the teams in our sectional do, we have to be more efficient on the offensive end,” Woelfle said. “We would defend for a long period of time, and then we would go down and take a quick shot, not necessarily a bad shot. But then it’s back down to the defensive end, and that takes a lot out of you.”
