TERRE HAUTE — It was all Lawrence North in girls high school basketball Saturday at Terre Haute South.

The Wildcats won their 14th game and showed why they are ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll and could be ranked higher with their 80-40 victory that put them in first place the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference standings.

Lawrence North is 5-0 in the league, half a game ahead of Center Grove at 4-0. The two leaders meet Jan. 25 and the Wildcats take on North Central, loser of one MIC game, later in the month.

The Wildcats used an 18-0 run in the first period to hike a 7-6 lead to 25-6 and were up 27-8 after eight minutes. They led 43-17 at halftime and took a 68-29 advantage into the fourth frame.

The Wildcats shot 50 percent for the game, making 34 of 68 shots, and recorded their second high total of the season. They had 82 in one game and scored 78 twice.

“We’re still a young team but two of our players have a lot of experience,” said LN coach Chris Giffin.

He said the team has attained one goal set prior to the season. “We won the [Marion] County championship in December,” said the coach.

Winning the MIC and advancing in the state tournament were two other goals.

The Wildcats take on another top Class 4A team Tuesday, playing at Hamilton Southeastern.

Three players had double-doubles for the 14-3 Wildcats in Saturday’s game. Jordan Hankins had 24 points and 10 rebounds; Mikale Rogers had 16 points and 10 boards and Lamina Cooper had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Lauren Hambrock had a double-double for the Braves, now 10-6 and 1-4 in the MIC. She had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Emily Bell had eight points and seven rebounds.

“Lawrence North had a great game … the defense led to some of the offense. That’s the most talented team we have seen this year,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.

South is at Danville, Ill., on Wednesday and returns home to face Carmel next Saturday.
