It was all Lawrence North in girls high school basketball Saturday at Terre Haute South.
The Wildcats won their 14th game and showed why they are ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll and could be ranked higher with their 80-40 victory that put them in first place the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference standings.
Lawrence North is 5-0 in the league, half a game ahead of Center Grove at 4-0. The two leaders meet Jan. 25 and the Wildcats take on North Central, loser of one MIC game, later in the month.
The Wildcats used an 18-0 run in the first period to hike a 7-6 lead to 25-6 and were up 27-8 after eight minutes. They led 43-17 at halftime and took a 68-29 advantage into the fourth frame.
The Wildcats shot 50 percent for the game, making 34 of 68 shots, and recorded their second high total of the season. They had 82 in one game and scored 78 twice.
“We’re still a young team but two of our players have a lot of experience,” said LN coach Chris Giffin.
He said the team has attained one goal set prior to the season. “We won the [Marion] County championship in December,” said the coach.
Winning the MIC and advancing in the state tournament were two other goals.
The Wildcats take on another top Class 4A team Tuesday, playing at Hamilton Southeastern.
Three players had double-doubles for the 14-3 Wildcats in Saturday’s game. Jordan Hankins had 24 points and 10 rebounds; Mikale Rogers had 16 points and 10 boards and Lamina Cooper had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Lauren Hambrock had a double-double for the Braves, now 10-6 and 1-4 in the MIC. She had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Emily Bell had eight points and seven rebounds.
“Lawrence North had a great game … the defense led to some of the offense. That’s the most talented team we have seen this year,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.
South is at Danville, Ill., on Wednesday and returns home to face Carmel next Saturday.

It was a game that confirmed his fears, coach Joe Boehler said Saturday night after his West Vigo team lost 67-51 in its Western Indiana Conference boys basketball opener to visiting Owen Valley.
“I think our young team showed up tonight,” Boehler said. “We did not handle success very well.”

Indianapolis North Central used 3-point shooting and defense to prevail in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls high school basketball Saturday, defeating Terre Haute South 67-46.
The Panthers got off to an 8-0 start in the early-afternoon contest played in the South gym and outscored the Braves 20-9 in the final frame to get even for the season at 3-3 and even in the conference at 1-1.

A season-opening high school boys basketball game at West Vigo on Wednesday night was as much about when the players did things as it was what they did.
Visiting North Vermillion seemed to have a close game under control the entire way because every time the host team made a run, Falcon star Brayden Woodard was there to answer.
Although West Vigo was never ahead in the last 28 minutes of regulation time, the Vikings got a game-tying 3-pointer from Alec Blair with 6.3 seconds left and pulled out a 47-46 victory on Braiden Cardinal’s driving layup with 10 seconds left in overtime.
Clay City hits 13 first-half treys in downing Wildcats
Clay City junior Evan Rogers hit his first 3-pointer of the night 45 seconds into the season opener at South Vermillion.
By the time another 2 minutes, 15 seconds passed on the scoreboard, he had hit a fifth 3-pointer, putting his Eels ahead 17-2.
Heat check? That time had already passed.
Rogers hit a sixth 3-pointer to put the Eels up 25-4 then finally missed one with 2:20 on the first-quarter clock.
